White Flash Speed Coat

Any one had experience with this stuff?

Here’s my experience:

I had built 2 wood veneered deck boards for use with a kite. Both are EPS/RR epoxy/glass. Bases are plain white.

What I did not realise is that ‘White Flash’ should really be called ‘Blue Flash’ as it has a bluish tint to it.

Unfortunately I sprayed both the base and the deck with the stuff, so although the base looked a nice bluish white, the wood deck looked awful.

I built the boards too light, so after a few sessions through the waves, I noticed the base rippling slightly.

No bother I thought, just sand down and re-glass.

2 problems I have found with ‘White Flash’

  1. It is very difficult to sand, clogs the sandpaper, even a bit when wet sanding.

  2. I am not sure if this is due to the 'White Flash, but when I sanded off the white flash coating, the glass has gone yellow.

I spoke to the distributor who supplied both the RR epoxy and the white flash, but he didn’t seem to know what was causing it.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks for that.

I think there is something else at play here. The board was bright white before I applied the speedcoat. The blank was sprayed with white acrylic, and I used a white pigment in the epoxy. After sanding off the speedcoat, it is very yellow compared to what it was before coating. The board was built about 2 months back, so I wouldn’t imagine ageing is a factor. I thought maybe that heat from sanding was a factor, but I scraped some of the speedcoat off with a razor blade - same problem.

Think I will stick to 2 pot car lacquer in future.
