What defines a Swaylocks member?
Someone who is interested in the design and construction of surfboards.
Next…
There is no deffinition. We all fit somewhere between two horizons: The curious “newbie”, at whatever design and crafting level you may be, and the guy who is working on his something thousandth board as we speak. Enjoy the ride!
ok to tell you the bad truth:
we are all fat, litlle dwarfs. hidding in the dark room. couchpotatos. dreaming of a glamoureus life as star shapers. we never had a girlfriend…
If you mean that status thingie under your name, it takes 100 posts to be a member. Here it is from FAQs…
How do I change my Newbie status?
Newbie, Enthusiast, Addict, Veteran and other forum statuses have nothing do do with a persons skydiving skills or abilities! Your status is automatically determined by the number of posts you’ve made to the forums. It is NOT etiquette to make frivolous and useless posts just to drive up your post numbers. Below are the different statuses that have been uncovered so far. There are more but we’ll wait till someone gets there!
0 => newbie
15 => user
50 => journeyman
100 => member
150 => enthusiast
300 => addict
500 => carp
800 => veteran
1000 => master

The poster above in no way shape or form represents this Swaylocks member. Thank you.
We’re just a bunch of guys who like surfboard design and surfing. That’s all.
Aloha

I am personally just a guy who likes to hand craft things. Whether it be fishing rods, bows for archery, or surfboards. I love things that are hand built. And love to design and build things, just like everyone else on this forum. Just built #001 and am planning #002. Been surfing for 15yrs with a hiatus for college. Terry

I will probably be a “newbie” for the rest of my days… Which is fine with me… I drifted onto Swaylocks about a year and a half ago and was blown away by the casual but detailed stoke of all involved…Boy, I miss Ramon…he was a pure Swaylaholic…just so jazzed to be here and sharing the trials and tribulations of what we all go through…then in early July of last year we learned of his passing and shortly after, it seems, Swaylocks started to change. I’ve often thought it was more than coincidence but who knows…but this place has sure changed.
I log on almost every day but keep my yap shut for the most part because I feed off the A-list and avoid the drivel. Look for posts - and archives - from Herb, Kokua, Jim P., Cleanlines, Paul J., Halcyon and a few others and you can cruise this site through the building of board after board and not have to log on and look or sound like a dork (though I’ve done that too).
Bottom line for me is that it’s all about the fun of being a surfer (since '64) and building boards (since '67) and making it all a special part of your life and - hopefully - being able to share it with like minded souls.
While you’re doing that…don’t worry about some b.s. classification on a web site that means absolutely nothing.
I worry more about running out of shaping fluid…

a leg on a millipede…ambrose… crawling through surfboard making conciousness
who am i ? im the neighbor with the sander and the weird smell…thats resin , it smells best in the morning when im laying out of work from a hangover ,finish my board im supposed to sell, around 3pm and decide to go surf it just to make shure it works…shure it works…hell i knew it would, but after those long nights in the shed i had to ride it.
Pete,
Swaylock’s has grown but has it really changed? I prefer to think of it as a different shade of the same original color. Or, to think of it another way – can you think of another place that is quite like it? Maybe you can think of Ramon’s passing in a more positive light – like his spirit is part of what’s keeping this place alive? I know I think about him regularly. In my humble opinion, the Swaylock’s spirit seems to alive and well and spreading.
To the general audience regarding labels and status. I like being able to see how many times a person has posted and I think the names are kind of a laugh. I never gave the whole thing a alot of thought. It was a built in feature and I just jotted down some tags. Perhaps I ought to open up a discussion for alternative “labels” for posters of various status levels? Either way, for starters, I’m thinking of doubling all of the post quantities because I had no idea how quickly some of you would climb in rank. I don’t want anyone to get a big head now do I?
Enjoy,
mp
well said. to expand it, for those who don’t catch ambroses wonderfully pithy comprehension of the whole, just one leg on a millipede hoping to get all of us maybe one small step down the way.
.
Thank you, ambrose, for saying that. You caught what I hope and strive to do in my very small way.

Surfingdude, Too many obviously missed your humor.
Let’s don’t take ourselves too seriously! Knowledge is out there, we’re all just wading through it. Doug
i recognized it. but i thought probably it´s different kind of humor here in old europe. sarcasm is used in austria all the time an maybe not as often in the states? could that be or am wrong? or probably the problem could be that i´m not that good in writing stuff in english. humor is hard to translate
clemens
im the guy who does it for love, because i love it…
i know i can come here and find someone who understands me , it relieves me of being stuck in my own world of concepts and curves…
sometimes knowledge can be a curse , also a blessing if you have someone to share it with…
appreciating the variety of the surfing experience,gaining insight into the tastes of others while constantly looking for refinement and redefining the boundries…
being helped and helping others in the search for ??? whatever it is we want out of surfing…
regards
BERT

Aptly said, Sean.
So I’m glassing in the backyard yesterday afternoon. My 6-year-old is trying really hard to sit on his ball and not throw it at me. Who am I? Our conversation says it all…
“Dad. WHAT are you doing?”
“I’m building a surfboard.”
“That’s so … stupid. I’ve never heard of ANYONE building a surfboard before. Why are you doing that?”
“Well, I wanted a board that’s a little different than the ones I already had. And I wanted to see if I could.”
“Oh. Ok. Phhhhhff. Don’t do it anymore, ok?”
