…Another note from my city of Anaheim enforcement code dept. ,stating, again, I must stop fabricating surfboards on my property…When I called the office of Anaheim code enforcement, the MAN claimed that the calls didn’t come from my neighbors, but from a anonymous person from the HuntingtonBeach/SealBeach area(some 25 miles away)(I doubt if the resin odor got that far).I then stated that I haven’t built any boards or even fixed one for 3 weeks. Both the officer and myself agree that it’s the work of someone in the industry, that doesn’t appreciate my craft. We did come to some agreeable terms as to ,“building” as a hobby.Nice try guys ,you’ll have to try harder.Herb

I can’t believe someone would do that. Fun is fun but that is just crap. Crap, crap, crap, crap, crap. One thing that could make that call legit is if one of your neighbors worked 25 miles away and got a bug up their butt at work and decided he/she didn’t want to get into it with you and made the call anonymously. Ick!
Herb, you may just want to ask around your neighborhood and see if somebody will fess up. A friend or mine used to paint cars in his garage and always made sure the folks on his street were well taken care of. one day I was at his house and saw his neighbor out mowing his lawn with a custom painted mower, complete with candy apple flames. Scott ps, I’ll call you later this morn so we can talk fish

I hope everything works out for you. There’s always some asshole, that’s got to mess with someone that is doing good. I hope things work out for you. Later, Stephen Berube
I have absolutely no knowledge of the particulars here, but… How close to home should you be looking? I’m really not trying to drve any wedges. And have NO idea… just remembering your previous problems. This is the ONLY word I’ll say on this subject, and I wouldn’t blame you, Herb, if you told me to shut up anyway.
Herb - I have mucho respect for you and your craft. As you remember, I was one of the first to fork over some $$$ for a set of your superchargers when you were giving them away. That said, I feel for ANY neighbors (including my own) who may have to put up with the noise, toxic fumes and toxic dust that our little “hobby” creates. Air management districts and fire departments (not to mention OSHA) haven’t just pulled regulations out of their hats regarding industrial/manufacturing problems. Any legitimate manufacturer who has set up his shop according to regs - including zoning, exhaust filtration, etc. is sure to have a beef with renegade “hobbyists” that are cutting in on their customer base. A neighbor who’s home is destroyed because of a chemical fire started in a garage based surfboard factory is going to have some issues as well. We all complain about air pollution, EFTA and third world countries cutting in on our product line with cheap, Asian sweat shop style production and skirting environmental protection policies but we can’t have it both ways. Herb, I sincerely wish you the best and hope for your continued contributions to the sport - maybe you could rent a little corner in a manufacturing facility in an industrial zone?

Howzit Herb, Ive got a friend who was in the same predictiment. The neighbors called the authorities on him when in fact it was an another neighbor doing resin work whise fumes were the problem. He got together with the EPA guys and all he had to do was install a scrubber system to appease them. I know things are a little more slack in Hawaii, but who knows it just might do the trick.Aloha and good luck, Kokua
man, it must be great to have a ‘regulation’ shop. i just finished a board, and my wife won’t go in the garage…she says it looks like ‘Chernobyl’, and that the clean-up starts tomorrow. i kind of don’t blame here…she asked me, real sweetly, if i would take a break from building, and i said yeah. i love doing it, but i’m getting sick of the mess. harry kellerman, huh?? even the name sounds like trouble[wink] good luck herb!
Ramon…funny, my husband has the same problem with the garage and my mess. [smile] It’s so bad he won’t even go in there to put clothes in the washer or take them out! But he still loves to see the finished product and loves to brag about how his wife can make surfboards!
…actually it’s a title of a Dustin Hoffman movie from the 70s.A good movie to see if you haven’t.I won’t give the movie away ,but it goes along the same lines of my board building,it’s kinda self destructive.Herb
Herb, just a thought. Why not open a small glass shop & teach people the trade on the side. I’m sure there are some people on this board who would gladly shell out a few bucks for some professional tips & there are probably even more who are looking for a good glasser. You can get a lot of used air handling equipment fron the restaurant trade (they have & over 50% failure rate.) I got paid to remove the ac unit & an exhaust system from one that was going out of buis. It is now working quite well in my shop. good luck!

…Actually Ray,That’s the route I think I’m heading, like it or > not,I just don’t want to pay a big ticket for the overhead.Herb The overhead is what kills most small buis. but it is also what take you further. The surfboard industry is not an easy road to financal security. This buis has some of the most incredable craftsman woring for the lowest profits. I make my living doing other things & build boards because I like to. My younger son is now building boards for his living.I can’t understand what happens to make peaple want to do this…its worse than drugs.
This goes to show that the old saying is true: “Just because you’re paranoid, don’t mean they’re not after you.” This happened to a friend of mine as well. This is a dirty old trick that has happened many, many times in the industry. Call the EPA (or another favorite government outfit) and make a claim that someone is violating code, then watch them quiver, because even if you are not violating code, you probably are breaking some law out there in your garage or shack, and a simple surprise inspection might uncover it. Heck, the number of appliances on a power strip is a code. So that’s how they get you. Then, they come back (surprise again) and find another “violation.” Then they close you down for a couple weeks or months, and come back again. hopefully by the time you paid the fines (or, greased palms) then you are back in business, while your competitor is laughing all the way to the bank. I’ve seen it a thousand…well, I’ve seen it.

But I had to kill time and keep boards moving. I would see Catri cruising my neighborhood looking for rail bones, resin containers, etc. I thought I had solved the problem when I found a temporary building in a Melbourne business park, well Dick’s buddy was on the zoning board and shot me down at the town meeting as being non complying. For the next 4 months, without a business license, I would got to work at 5 PM, when the inspectors were home with a cold beer in hand and work til 2AM. I didn’t get bagged, the building I wanted came up for rent, Dick and I are the best of friends, the rest is history.

I’ve glassed only one board by myself so far, and it was in my garage. I don’t think I’ll do it again, too much smell, dust, toxic fumes … However I have not given up and am seriously looking at alternate ways of building board that produce less waste and nuisance. For instance (although it is very toxic) epoxy don’t smell. I’ve also heard that if you vaccum bag your board, you greatly reduce the sanding needed. Building a board out of wood (hollow hardwood, balsa, cork…) means you may work outdoor (wood dust is safe for the environment while chemical foam isn’t)and most of the work can be done with a hand planer (less noise). Of course such building techniques are probably not a good way to make money, but they’re fun and if you’re in it for the money then your home garage is probably not the right place anyway. Pierre.
Herb This is nothing new in the surfboard industry. There is always some one wanting to get read of the competition. A general rule in the industry is not to tell on fellow builders. There is not a builder who has not violated some government code. Maybe it is time to see if that person is building boards at home? I am very careful to keep the smell way from my neighbors when glassing. Building only one board a year UV resin is not feasible. Posting on this group might have made you the target. I know that I have been virus attacked because of the surfboarding building web site I maintain. Unless this guy is watching you, I would start building boards again. Just do not broadcast it on the net.>>> …Another note from my city of Anaheim enforcement code dept. > ,stating, again, I must stop fabricating surfboards on my > property…When I called the office of Anaheim code > enforcement, the MAN claimed that the calls didn’t come from my > neighbors, but from a anonymous person from the HuntingtonBeach/SealBeach > area(some 25 miles away)(I doubt if the resin odor got that far).I then > stated that I haven’t built any boards or even fixed one for 3 weeks. Both > the officer and myself agree that it’s the work of someone in the > industry, that doesn’t appreciate my craft.>>> We did come to some agreeable terms as to ,“building” as a > hobby.Nice try guys ,you’ll have to try harder.Herb http://www.viser.net/~anthwind/
