Who is using a Makita planer or copy?

Having too much time on my hands, I made a dust extractor/vacuum attachment so I can use the planer in the garage without major cleanup hassle, since we usually enter the house through the garage, and it’s on the upwind side of the house.

After several false starts, I used a bit of 1/4 inch mahogany ply to blank off the planer dust chute, then some paraffin to create a male mold around which I wrapped scraps of glass and brushed with UV cure resin. The “spout” where the vacuum hose connects is molded over a bit of PVC pipe. When cured, popped off the blank plate and dug/melted out the wax mold. I got about ten feet (stretched) of used vacuum hose for 8 bucks, not the lightest slinkiest, but excellent for the price. Made an adapter from the vacuum hose to my shop vac.

I have so far only used it once, but with my shop vac it caught all the dust from skinning, leveling and some rail bands. Then finished with the surform and sanding block in the back yard. The system seems to work well. It was easy to make I’d make a few more, for just about beans, if there was interest. Picture to come.

doing the same thing charlie . great for skinning and bands and has saved alot of dust
