Lots of folks chip!
That why they have those “Total Wipeout” shows on TV…
So shoot away!..
stuffed up glassing when couldn’t find my squeegee after adding catalyst to my bucket of resin… thinking quickly, i cut a straight edge on one of my flip flops (thongs for the aussies)with a bench saw, and used that! actually came out ok though…
okay ,
just woke up , returned to sways and saw 'undefined' written on my attempted copy and paste
looks like the stuff ups have begun before I even posted eh ? :)
well, what I was trying to post ,
I will now type out .
this may take a while
[it was from facebook messages section ...]
"no names provided here " , was the understanding for me to type it here .....
I quote .....
" I had a disaster with my latest board . I got a 'f. up fairy' tale for ya. "f ' up fairy" ? they visit you in the shaping bay from time to time.and f you right up ...wrestle you for the planer , pour dirt in your resin , let the uv in when the job ain't finished....
this board had the most stuff ups that have happened to me at the one time ....
" .... my bay is.... hang tarps for a wall , and have a portable lighting stand.
It was a bit windy. I got the resin ready , layed out the glass, mixed a bit of catalyst for the label. Then started.
A huge gust of wind came in . Knocked over the lighting stand. It hit the board. I had to leave the stand lying down , ran to the house to get tweezers , to pick the dirt out. Got that done , smoothed back the glass and thought "stuff it , finish the thing !" So , I kept going ...it gets better !
I had almost glassed up to the rails on the bottom deck and ....
another gust of wind blew the tarps up. More dirt , more s*** on the board.
I'm swearing , trying to finish it quickly. And then I realised the rails had a ding from where the lighting stand hit it. So I put down the resin bucket , and carefully worked the glass in the fine crack . But it left air bubbles. Not much I could do .
I stepped back to pick up my bucket and ...
put my foot in it [?!]
I had on what of course were my LAST pair of sneakers , now all gloriously covered in shiny resin , up to my ankles !
I poured some more resin , a new mix of UV , laughed the rest of the way through , and completed the board. "
[ben] "so , WHAT happened to the board mate , did you sell it ?"
"it was the one I was going to give ------- as a thank you , but the wind right royally screwed THAT up and I wasn't prepared for the elements. I'm still going to show them the idea behind it , but I'll never glass again without a proper bay , to protect me from the elements. " .
so...
lesson learnt , it would seem ? [and lucky he was using uv resin , too ! ]
cheers !
ben
[if I can find it , I'd also like to post my "niagara falls" effect [board disaster] photo on this thread , just so people can have a laugh !]
I posted this one before Chip but I don't know why.
I was laminating in trunks after getting out of the water wearing slippers. Got the bottom rolled out and went to pour and dropped the bucket. It fell upright and landed perfectly flat. Problem was, that made the whole thing splash up my leg and onto my junk.
Not only did it burn like he#%, the cleanup was a bi#$%!
Walked in on a young fella using my facilities last week. He was about 10minutes into glassing a log he was making using different pigmented areas. He goes to the back of the board and attempts to pour about 500ml purple resin on the tail area and it flows out for a second and then seems to gel mid air. Looks like a big cows tongue! He trys to push it around for a bit, swearing like a tourettes sufferer, my laughter didn’t help. It was a real mess but he ended up salvaging it well. Will post a pic of the finished board soon.
...he never told me THAT part of the story !
I WAS wondering why so much resin in the icecream container though , I thought he had just taken my recipe for raspberry icecream and was trying a new swirl for dessert !
nice job 'young fellah !"
t blank ,
" I was laminating in trunks after getting out of the water wearing slippers "
???!!!
hasn't anyone told you slippers are NOT the best footwear for surfing ? [ especially the big fluffy bright PINK ones...don't wear THEM , because they make the sharks a bit too randy , apparently !]
cheers
ben
Chip, how then do you do a side-slip without the 'ers??
.....no fin , perhaps ?
my two favourite board making stuff up stories from the sways archive years , would have to be the hawaiian guy [?anyone remember his name , it was "something" like 'terminator', from my hazy memory]
his board blew out of his shaping 'area' ...a bonzer ...and impaled itself neatly on a neighbours paling fence , apparently ?
and the more recent one , of the guy whose dog attacked his blank [? bit the nose off? ...the blank , not the dog's]
I hope/ wish I could find those posts , and copy them here ....
cheers !
ben
One of our cats decided to use my unlaminated balsa board as a scratching post to sharpen her claws!
The board was almost ready for laminating, final touches to go - hollow wood with blasa deck and rails. Cat takes two huge chunks out of the rails with her teeth and numerous scratches!
needless to say there was much cursing and commotion from my side.
spose my wife did ask me to stop leaving all my boards around the house and put them in the garage - but i was too busy admiring my latest handiwork!!!
bloody feline menace!!! haha
Good stories so far fellas, keep em coming!
I came home from work one evening to find a bit of EPS foam carefully placed on top of our printer. Picked it up...to my horror it was 2-3 inches from the nose of mostly finished blank.
Took the blank out...more horror! Foam covered in heel prints and gouges from the nearby desk and furniture.
My 4yo thought it would be a good idea to repurpose the blank into a slide by placing the tail on a blanket box and trying to slide down it...
I believe his excuse was that he could not safely lift any of the glassed boards...
Loving these stories, gives me a smile on those hard days at work. Thanks guys
