Who wouldn’t- it goes fast even in crappy surf and makes me feel like I’m as good at this as Rasta.
Because my shortboard bogs on anything less than head-high and it offers waaay more line range than my longboard when it gets below head-high (but it’s still bowly). I still break the LB out when it’s knee-or-less though – even the fish can’t handle that with my 200lbs of tubby love ape-ing on it.
I like to switch between 8’ eggs, and my 6’ fish. I’ve always enjoyed short boards for the control, but age has made it more practical to ride longer wider cruisers. With a longer board, I usually cruise, but with the fish, I can cruise or turn all over the place with incredible control.
I’ve ridden fishes since the mid 70’s, but the 5 fin setup is much different than any other fish I’ve had. It has all the wonderful characteristics of fish boards (fast, loose, easy to paddle), but this one has the bite of a thruster. This board has given me the rush I used to get surfing 20 years ago.
I’ll ride this board in anything from waist high to double overhead town waves, but if it’s only 2-4, I’ll take one of my 8’ boards or even a 10 footer out just to be able to catch a few more waves. I think it’s easier to go back and forth between a fish and a longboard.
'cause it reminds me of what surfing used to feel like when I was a kid. Like hooking up with an old flame… if you’re lucky, at some point you suddenly remember, “oh yea…THAT’s what it feels like!”
Aside from the obvious advantages, they give me that souly feeling… take off the leash, and feel free…
Because it gives me the speed to surf the wave the way I want to surf it!!
…because it’s all about flow …and speed
Just walk mine thru the kitchen and put it on the plate.
…OH and a wiseass…does your mother know you’re throwing another party again?..I think not!
-
Because i am making it out of an extremely dinged up and wrecked longboard blank.
-
Because it’s not to “retro’d out”
-
Because it has a single fin option
-
Because i’m a bit worried it wont turn out.
-
Because I wathced “the fryed fish experiment”.
yeehaaa
josh is starting fish experiments …
you know what question comes next from me of course , DON’T you young josh …

Photo’s when it looks a bit more respectable, haha.
I’m thinking a red with white polka dot spray.
Because they are an incredible design by steve Lis that few have realized their full potential …even now.The tuberiding, high top end, drive, super high line, etc, etc.
I love my fish for many reasons, primary one is my cousin Rocky McKinnon got it right for me. I’m 5’11" 210lbs, the board is EPS 7’8" 17"X23"X17"X2 7/8" which I’m sure will seem wide fat and long to some but it works great for me. It’s got 6 and 4oz glass top and bottom. It originaly had the Futures Vector II Quad fin setup, but it slide a little too much, I had a set of JJ’s and I threw them in the trailing slots and it has changed the handling significantly. It drives through the bottom turns with me laying into it, but they will break loose at the end of a big roundhouse just the way I like it.
The EPS gives tons of flotation, but the board feels way lighter than anything else I have. Prior to my two EPS boards I owned one Surftech 9’0" and I didn’t like it at all (could have been the board), I thought the rails were too soft and the board flex wasn’t good for my liking. But the EPS has completely changed my mind about Epoxy, I love it especially with my fish. I’ve ridden it in 2ft chop on the east side and it worked, and I’ve had it in 4-6ft country and it really came alive.
Good to see schrocat!
I was dazed in wanting a traditional twin keel for a considerable matter of time but i’m now loving hybrid fishes. not thruster style but more like the stuff you and chipfish are experimenting with.
stoked your board worked for you. i’m only going 5’11" on my fish but your board is inspiring.
cheers mate.
josh.
Nice!! Good stuff stinkbug!
Interesting thread.
It seems that sways is pretty pro fish. I actually thought it was the big thing till last month in Cape Town I had some chats with some local shapers. Their take on it is that their high performance longboards will outride the fish in “smaller” waves and their short boards take care of the job in the heavier surf. I must admit I saw longboarding there I hadn’t seen anywhere else outside the dvd player. One shaper suggested that it had more to do with the rider than the shape of the board, admittedly the fish is easier to ride than a “proper” shortboard but then again, I saw 9 foot boards that challenged the skills out of anything but a expert rider, ultra thin, narrow and thruster layout (not 2+1, really thruster like a proper short board), in the hands of a local ripper this meant 3 foot surf and verts, sprays, re-entries the lot!!! For my humble self the fish means paddling harder and takeing off more critical than a longboard.
…is there any living creatures that can swim faster than a FISH ?
yep,
of course !!
