Like a lot of others have said, fish are fun. My first experience with one was when they first were popularized in the early 70s. It really opened my eyes as to what a multi finned board could do. For me, it made riding less than ideal waves a lot more fun. It seems I’ve gone full circle in board design. From longboards as a kid, shortboards, twins, thrusters, now back to longboards and the fish again. I don’t ride mine as often as I would like to, when I do I still get that same buzz like when I rode one before.
The only answer to this question is found in Nathan Oldfield’s Masterpiece “Journey of a Quad”
His story of Noelani is one of the greatest posts ever to grace the pages of this website
and for that I am forever grateful
For someone who likes drivey, down the line, power surfing, I think a fish is the ultimate, elegant answer to the single fin dilema (how to shorten the turn radius without losing drive). I’ve always felt that the thruster, quad and 2+1 were a bit contrived, “Let’s add a fin, that’ll keep it from spinning”.
I buy MR’s comment,“If you don’t like a twin fin, it’s because you’ve never ridden a good one.” At some point, someone is going to put the right keel position on the right rocker with the right bottom and outline and the ultimate carver will be born.
I can’t wait for winter ‘cause I still haven’t found the limit for my 6’4" Fishull. 10’ faces so far and it’s begging for more. Pinch some rails and put a little roll in the hull on your next one…
(And to think I almost threw the little buggah back!)
Because if I had not gotten on some sort of a quest to build a good fish(still trying) I would probably be riding, gasp, gasp, a nine-0. Mike
Funny, you got a laugh out of me.
tho i’ve been fairly recently turned on to bonzers of the 3 & 5 fin nature, i still love my fish b/c:
I love my 6’2" Bonzer Octafish.
With the 6.5" Bonzer fin.
This board is so versatile it’s unbelievable. From waist high beachys to overhead points and heaving hollow sandbars. It handles all of them with the smoothness, comfort and confidence that Bonzers provide.
