Whys my fin rope green?

My fin roving turned green. I followed all the great instructions by us guys for getting my fin patches to blend & it worked ok. I used uv resin, bgf aerolite cloth & did a cheater coat, you can still see shadows around the fins but I’m ok with the results. This time my fin roving never turned clear. Geezzz there’s always something. I’ve heard of using styrene monomer to make the fillet clear. Should I be adding that to my lam resin when I’m wetting out the fin roving & patches? If so, what is the ratio? Thanks for the help

idk why the picture is sideways sorry

It’s the color of your resin.

because that’s what fin rope does. Woven roven does the same thing too…you should know that now…it was explained in your last thread.

…to become a good builder you should understand things and work from that; so like Stingray is saying is not asking and asking only; deduce it.

The problem there is that you put too much rope and with a volan finish. Some brands with silane are somewhat greenish too.

Also, you do not need gobs of rope.

Truth is, you don’t need any.      The strongest glass on mount, is with bias cut cloth, only.      Been doing fins that way since 1960.     It’s not a ‘‘production method’’ as it requires more time and skill.

What Resin are you using? Sylmar 249a? You should not see your patches.

Your roving is probably volan (ps. You got a lot of it too). If you did, this is probably also the resin for your shadow. When you pulled your resin, you pulled some of the volan with it. I kinda like the green but it’s not what your going for so it frustrating.

Also if you are buying roving, skip that. Just pull 6-7 strands from the side of your cloth.

Here is one I just finished. Aerolite cloth with sylmar 249a (and reicholds gloss). Grind the edges real good and you see no traces of a patch. I also lay my cloth as described by bill.

Thanks guys. Your advice is extreamly helpful. I’m only on board #15 & I obviously have a lot to learn. I did use double the fin roving this time because my last board started cracking along the base of fins. I wanted it to withstand some high speed turns. Guess I overkilled it. I’ll do it  differently next time. Thanks for the advise.

I tried to reply twice in the last day and got error messages both times. As another person said, you probably have volan glass. And, as they also said, it’s damn easy to make your own fin rope. Especially if you have some 8 or 10 oz cloth on hand.

I thought I posted here yesterday, too.  What I said has already been covered.  What I also said is your board looks like a fun little fish.  Mike

The one time I had fin rope turn green like that it was when I bought pre packaged fin rope in the local surf shop.  No idea what finish was on that crap.  Now just pull strands off of a square of 6oz.

I have noticed this too happen with uv cure resin & what i do is add mekp which seems to take out the greenish tint for the most part.

Tried. To post on this when the thread got started but came up error.  All the various reasons posted above are possible.  A lot of roving comes in Volan finish which turns green.
