wide point for guns

I was searching the archives, again to no avail, trying to find some info about where to put the wide point on a (California) gun or semi gun. My intuition would be to put it right in the middle, trying to keep everything pretty neutral.

What are your thoughts and experiences?

Also, I was trying to find info on quad guns, which I hear more and more of the Mavericks crew are using. Anybody got any specifics on fin size, placement in realtion to board sizes?

I’m currently building a semi-gun and went with the wide point center, but I understand some go a couple of inches forward. -matt

Single fin or trifin? if a single then the wide point forward. Trifin set it middle. Probably best to set it middle if it’s your first one. Shape is kind of important… but fin placement, fin size, and rail/ rocker design are critical. Nothing like screaming down a huge wave on your own creation! VIVA Swaylocks, right into the pit, pull in, spit out…spat!

Good site with a ton of info on quad gun setups:

I’ve never shaped a true gun, but on the semi, the wide point should be slightly ahead of center to facilitate drive, particularly on steep faces and in the barrel when the surfer’s weight is on the front foot, and for projection out of turns for maximum speed. Less curve from the nose to the midpoint and more curve from the midpoint to the tail.

Have Fun!
