Will it hold ,Mr.Hand,Gee Mr Spicoli,I don't know?(Snapped Surftech)

…I was asked if I could fix a snapped in half R.A. Serftech longboard. My answer was NO,for several reasons, one being I don’t have the time, and don’t really care to fix boards, unless I have to.I also said being it’s a styrofoam EPS board, once you snap it,that’s it, you’ll never get it back together strong enough to last YOU thru an average surf session without snaping it again, not to mention tinsel strength compromises, etc. …This guy got all pissed off yelling about how he could fix it,blab, blab, blab.I told him to check this site out for various opinions. …What do you thing guys,…can you fix it?..will it hold?..800.00+ shot down the drain in less than a month.Herb

Even if I knew how to fix it, I wouldn’t on principle. aloha, tom

Herb Just send him to the shop he bought the board from or a windsurfing shop they fix styro boards all the time. Fully snapped boards are not a easy fix. It will be ugly and weigh a lot. Most of the repair people, I know would not take the job and they have experience in repairing those boards. All of the forces are in the core material / skin. If he was able to snap it once it will snap again, because repairs will not bring it back to original strength. There are also water issues, you can never get all the water out of a styro board when it heats up in the sun it will blow a leak. You do not want this guy back complaining about your repair efforts. It is a Lose / Lose situation. In the windsurfing world, styro boards are called throw way boards, once serious damaged. One of the best things to say it that I do not have the composite experience to fix such a board. The best person to look at the board is Eva (the board lady, she lives north of LA, I think Santa Barbara). She has more experience at styro board repair than probably anyone else in the world and is looked upon as the leading person in board repair advice. Anthony http://www.viser.net/~anthwind/

It’s history. I had a friend that lost his off the top of his $60k SUV… The board was so toast nose rail and tail all screwed up so bad that he ordered a new one and they sent his back to surftech… I don’t know what it cost him or if he ever got it back?? I was as ugly as they come… I’ve seen real boards come out of the same thing with a few crushed corners and rails but a little suncure and there back in the water in a few days… A month old surftech broke??? with no one willing to fix it??? the wave of the future???>>> …I was asked if I could fix a snapped in half R.A. Send him back to SURFTECH, interesting to see how strongly they stand behind their product.

OK, it was rather lengthy but did anybody read my post in answer to Wayne Kelly? No board is guaranteed against breakage (I guess you can buy Stewart’s protection package) but I still believe that no stringer puts Surf Techs at higher risk. I have seen some broken Surf Techs put back together and with a strategically placed competition stripe they looked OK. They even held up reasonably well - done properly, with wood, glass or carbon fiber mini stringers bridging the break, it might even be stronger than the original.

…I heard the boards out of the old eastern block countries(eastern warsaw pact),Boardworks have stringers in them?Is this true? Are they of the same pvc/epoxy pressure molded gook? …I have also heard that Boardworks has insurance you can buy? That’s great???,800+ bucks for the board and what another couple hundred for a warranty you should be already getting? It is a mass/popout after all,not a hand built product.Herb

it is repairable. It is not styrofoam, it is low density EPS. Sand 3’’ wide til the EPS apears, then put a layer 6oz on the EPS, then a layer of pvc-foam, then a few layers 4oz. Sand and paint with pu(DD) paint. The surf-techs are originaly painted with dd paint. A week ago i did a repair like this on a bottomplate from a F3000 race car.
