Sorry for the hijack, but it’s on the same topic…So in that pic that reverb posted above…After surforming/sanding the decks glass laps (lapping onto the bottom of the board, ready for hotcoat), is that what it should look like, andonce hotcoated and glossed, will the actual lap lines look sharp (so they lok like they are fresh cut with scissors)? I’m looking to get the SHARP lap lines on a full resintinited board and this is ALWAYS a problem for me. I feel that if I surform the lines down (either deck ad/or bottom), that they will end up looking torn or muddy in the final product…Thanks.
Huh???
I was just kidding around.Glad to to see everyone is OK. RB
Auto body files work really well…surf supply laces are hip to them nowadays. hey are the ones with curved grooves in them. They cut really well. Some are flat and there are others that are semi round. The semi round is a little tricky to use…especially with nearby color work.
The comment about Gene Cooper (Cooperfish?) using rollers to roll down lap into the foam…yeah, I used to do that when I was young and immortal (now I’m just…Dead!?) It always seemed wrong to me to be rolling the lap into the foam…it takes a bit of a touch to do it nicely…if you have a lead foot on the pedal when you drive, I suggest you look for other alternatives.
Then there was the cutting those laps with single edge razor blades (dangerous paraphenalia in the 80’s) and the problem with cut laps was if you cut d-o-w-n into the foam. Seems like the glass jobs cracked there later…yup, whack! Crack! Right where you sliced through the glass into the blank…sacrilegious (who uses words like that? Who the hell do I think I am…Drew Kampion!)
Down boy… I said down!
Greenough wouldn’t bother with obsessing about the lap…he was in love with Krylon.
