whats up? i live in wilmington and shape surfboards for my friends and myself ive been doing it for about 3 years now i dont do my own glass work do to the fact that its very easy to ruin a surfboard with all those power tools i have my glassing done down in garden city sc at dynamic glasswork. i would be happy to help you shap your own board there is no better feeling then surfing on a board you made. email me at wardo_3000@yahoo.com cain.
there is no better feeling then surfing on a board you made
i disagree. getting a good ride on your own creation is a great feeling, but seeing the grin on your best friend’s face when he pulls out of a long noseride with ten off the tip of the board that YOU made for him…THAT is the best feeling
Wayne, you can get everything you need to make a board at a glassing shop in leland (20 mins from wilmington) called Glasstech. Blanks, resin, cloth, plugs…etc can be purchased there. Just remember to bring a container for the resin, they dont provide you one.
Thanks for the help guys…I’ve been out to the Glasstech shop before, but I didn’t realize
Dave sold supplies.
BTW…does anyone around here work with epoxy or XPS blanks? I know none of the major shapers do, but I was wondering if any of the home shapers have tried.
I glassed a regular clark foam blank with epoxy and didnt like it. The mixing was different and I wasnt sure when it was going to dry. The board came out VERY strong but I dont know if I want to do it again. As far as EPS blanks I never shaped a board before but I made some radio control airplanes with EPS foam and epoxy before and they do come out nice if one is patient and careful with the foam. Unlike clark foam, eps foam breaks into chunks very easily so it must be sanded carefully.
I have worked out my own blanks from lowes blue extruded foam.Have made 3 to date. The latest is a old style fish with some special effects. Took it to oak island for frances swell. It quite a ripper and half the weight of traditional boards. Have some bugs to work out yet though.
I just made a hollow wood with foam exterior board. The foam is the 1/2 inch pink(yes pink) sheets of insulation foam. The kind with thin plastic sheets you have to take off of. ten bucks for and 8x4 sheet was great for my fish. The only problem is contact cement eats right through it so use gorilla grip or the elmer’s equivelant. I used epoxy and other than my very bad glassing skills (first board ever) it came out nice.
Hows it going, I am from wilmington and am also shaping my first board right now, if you need to email me at
Rooster surf, i was also down in the Oak Isle area for the frances swell on saturday, stayed up right next to LB pier for the day and took out a fish. Definitely lots of fun out there with the contest and the beach scene in general.
Wayne, I will be back in carolina beach this weekend.
My picture is about as good as my epoxy glass job but i’ll send it.
The first board I made from the foam was like 7' and 3 1/4" 23 wide. was trying to make a short style board that would catch all the waves like a long board. Its got some big bugs in it. I used epoxy then latex paint and sealed.
The fish was made with blue tint and swirl that looks more like blotch, lol, but at least it rips.
im in ILM…i cant show you how to do it, the best i can say is trial and error…seems to be it, i guess…not messin with epoxy but…not really trying to sell anything ,but ill glass if you need me to , just say the word …need supplies?..i {might} be able to help…im a little project, thinking about orderin some bulk stuff ,so if you need a gallon or two, yard or seven, blank or three…maybe we could both benefit, who knows…just say im allwas here or north end cb and south of kb pier ,or at work .damn that sht bores me,ive thought about messin around with eps( lowes.home depot) just for fun but the epoxy thing seems a little different than im used to.
Hey Have, how can I get a hold of you? I have been getting ready to make a few more boards. Something in the 9’ range and one for my daughter maybe in the 6’ area. So what can you do?
