Right now we are using a string but he had a lot of problems with it coming untied and whatever but yesterday we went out in San Diego area and he got barreled with it.

Sweet Hand planes. Nice rails and glass job. Try using tubular webbing from REI and zip ties (strong ones) through the middle of it for the straps. Later.
