Winter hang..?

Retiring next year, and as much as I like living and surfing in Oregon, winters here tend to be long, surf starved and frankly, dreary.  Getting out for a couple of months each winter will probably help me from relating to  The Shining a tad too much…

So looking for an affordable mid-winter hang, fun enough waves (like a bit of size), not overly crowded, reasonablly affordable, and doesn’t neccessarily need a car full time.  Have spent a fair amount of time in Mexico and Costa Rico over the years, and have watched my favorite haunts become what I had orignally gone there to avoid. And have spent enough time on Oahua, Maui and Kaui to have no illusions about crowds or cost.

So thinking maybe the Kona coast on the Big Island, and would welcome any advice on a good town in the area to hang each winter for a couple of months.  And any other suggestions for a low key hang where an aging surfer could keep the gills wet and dry the moss off his hide.

Check you PM.

i spent about 5 months in kona a few years back and absolutly loved it, if you dont mind waiting for surf for a week or two then you would problely like it, pluse theres always surf on the othere side of the island but the winds are usaully on shore, or you can surf down around the south piont of the island where the swell wraps around and the wind is mostly off shore( currents can get really bad though and kinda sharky), plenty of other things to do on the big island as well

appreciate the PM’s…a few with the same X on the map…gotta wonder how many Swayaholics are sharing the same hang/lineups without knowing it…

Just go to p pass and save the extra money and get a cheap panga!

Still bear the reef scars from sessions in Indo,Tahiti, Fiji, West Oz, etc…now closing in on 62, my idea of a good hang includes fun overhead waves over bottoms that don’t resemble an industrial cheese grater, surfers in the lineup who aren’t in a hyper froth, the company of my wife, a comfortable chair, and an ice pack from the fridge for a chronic back…LOL

You can do all that plus eat poke, plate lunches and saimin anytime you want in the locale I told you about.   Lowel
