Wombat 6'4"

Hi everyone!

I was planning on doing my 1st surfboard, and have though on a Wombat… as I’m not so confident to mess up a blank shaping it from scratch, i have been playing around with shape 3D. The image you see is the final result after many hours sweating in front of the computer.

The idea is to make it cut with a CNC, so I get more confident, and shape the next one!

How do you see it? Any hints? Thanks for your inputs, and all the information in this forum, it’s just brilliant!

I reckon man up and hand shape it! Watch shaping 101 by John Carper on You-Tube for some good info. Just take your time and think about every cut before you do it.

I think finding the right blank and extracting that shape from it may be a lot easier said than done.

OK,

Back half looks good.

Front half has issues.

Look at rocker curve on the top and the bottom.

See the kink?

Bottom has a long flat spot from the centre forward.

The front half needs to be blended with the back.

If you dont, it’s gonna push water.

Just built this 6’8".

Diamond Tail 2+1.

Similar outline.

Wish I was computer litterate enough to flip that rocker shot around to compare rockers.

Here ya go…

When I looked at the profile diagram I had the same reaction as Barry.  I’m not that familiar with design programs but if it is possible, try changing the nose rocker - where it reads 1 1/2", maybe try something like 1 7/8" or even 2".  Some programs allow you to ‘grab’ a segment and ‘pull’ it as the rest of the design (deck and bottom) automatically gets blended to fit.  If not, you will have to alter the rest of the rocker measurements as well so they blend with the rest of the bottom curve.  Hopefully the deck curve will follow.

I don’t know Barry’s nose rocker spec at the tip but I’m sure it’s more than your 3 3/8".

In any case, Barry’s side view presents a good comparison.  The front 1/2 of your rocker needs to have more of an arc to it unless you’re shooting for a deep concave through the center of your board in which case that center ‘bump’ (“kink” per Barry) on the bottom will likely be eliminated to a great degree.

All that said, sometimes it’s best just to go ahead and shape the mofo, ride it and see what happens.  Many people have been surprised (good and bad) by design quirks that may or may not have looked good on paper…

Looking at the bottom rocker in the nose, starting from where it says “41.8” all the way to just past where it says “1 1/2”, it’s almost a straight line.

I think this is what other folks have already mentioned.

Wombat Combat is a small dirt bike that boys like me dreamed about…I still dream about having a dirt bike…Like a Honda a XR75… some dreams come true…some fade away…chasing a surf dream now…
