wood fin ding repair

Been searching the archives for awhile now. tried “wood fin repair”, “fix wood fin”, “wood fin ding” and just about every other combo of those and similiar words. I’ve seen the topic before but can’t find it now.

Got a ding on one of my fins last night from a reef in LaJolla. Marine ply, chunk of glass missing, maybe a 1/4 inch deep by 3/8 wide on the tip. Damage down to but not including the wood. Wood got wet but for only a min or so. Plan on just making sure its dry, and glassing it over. Dilemma is how do I “fill” the missing glass. Don’t want to use q-cell as I don’t want the repair to be opaque. Chop up some 4 oz and mix it in some sanding resin before glassing over?

Sand the edges smooth and lam with 4oz. One piece underneath the same size as the hole and a bigger piece over the top, lapping onto the intact glass by 1/4" all around.

Sand it even with 100 grit & hotcoat.

Much stronger & less likely to pop back out when the fin flexes than doing chopped fibers.

Thansk Benny, I’ll give it a shot and let you know how it turns out. Good thing I won’t need the little board for at least a few days. The gun is ready for its first real work-out of the year!
