Has anyone made a surfboard with rods on the inside of the board?
I am looking for general informaion on the construction process, do’s and dont’s. The width and type of rods to use, wood or carbon? Placement inside blank? Glue to use?
If anyone has rider information on the surf-side of such a craft that would be the best !
Thinking about cutting of two big chunks off, parabolically— then make a perfect half circle in both cut offs and the center— and then glue/epoxy the stuff together— Glass [with or without balsa, carbon, s-glass, e-glass on top/bottom] SURF
CMP of Surfgear.cc was going to make a board with removable rods instead of a stinger. He was going to have several options that would make the board stiffer by changing the rods. Kind of like how a sailboard sail can be stiffened up with the rods.
Yes, a guy in our area named Steve Pendarvis (PendoFlex, formerly “Soft Shell Wibbulator”), has been placing rods inside boards for more than 30 years.
I know he used carbon fiber fishing pole blanks and placed them into routered slots under some initial pre-load.
His boards are quite unique and they flex and spring in a noticible manner.
What law of nature did i miss for it to not work?? The rods stilll work even if not attached to the board: they flex and spring back… even without attachment…
I think Doc was hinting at the fact that if they are only bonded to the foam and not to the skin/glass that the flex characteristics will be lost due to the “softness” of the foam - all the flex would get absorbed.
here’s one I did, a mutant experimental fish board with a hardwood rod routered into a slot on the deck post-glassing and placed under tension into holes in the (wide) stringer. Then preweighted and glassed into place. Post-surgery, the board works really well but it did add some weight…
