Ok so I just finished my first board as you know and it turned out great thanks to all of you guys on sways. For school this year I got tech ed. as a class, which is everyday and a full year class. Basically, the teacher says to think of a project and complete it during the class. There is every type of saw and tool imaginable except for planers which might be a problem. This leads me to my question. Would it be possible to make a wooden hollow throughout the year? I would have 50 minutes a day to work on the board. I feel like this would be a great project which would take a good amount of time to complete. I can get the right type of wood for really cheap so this would not be an expensive deal. The experience of shaping a foamie and the look of a wooden board really entices me to go forth with this project. I have to thank Paul Jensen for this inspiration, when he posted the thread about that hollow dvd. So is this a realistic possibility or just something that would be better off done at home? Thanks!
Anything is possible. If you have the motivation and your teacher allows you to do the project go for it. Just realize what your getting your self into. Make the commitment and stick with it. Ive been a shop teacher for over 21 years and I have had students complete foam boards in as little as two weeks. Building a rocker table and milling your stock takes time but it should all be well worth it in the end. Good luck.
I figure it takes about 40 hours from starting a design on paper to having it ready to glass…And that’s doing it ‘the old way’ using a gluing jig…Do it ‘the new way’ (on the DVD) and it’s about a ten hours shorter…
My question is, what are you going to do during the other eight months…???..
I see a quiver in your future…

Do you get time off for good behavior?
Seriously, I think thats a great idea if I could go back and do a shop class thats what I’d be making. If they they won’t let you of for the other 8 months then I think you should make fins for every one. I like the checker board ones.
where is this thread with the dvd? can someone post up the link for me? thanks
sounds good, thanks for the encouragement and replies. I am going to ask my teacher monday and get back to you. He seems like a cool guy so hopefully hell let me do it. Another thing. We have a shopbot at the school which uses cad files to create signs and everything. Could I cut the ribs with this? I took CAD1 last year so I have a little bit of backround experience with it. Maybe I should just stick to going by hand but and I am probably getting a little ahead of myself. Ill post back soon. Thanks
