Tunnel fins.
And maybe those longboards with the wings on the tail to supposedly pull the tail down and lift the nose.
Don’t forget the Hobie Gary Propper Diamond Tail Vee bottom single fin.
What can we learn from those?

You children. Anyone remember John Kelly’s hydrofoil?
Oh, yes. Even those boards had their ‘‘true believers.’’
Any board that is too wide to sling under your arm will be a chore to carry,
sharp tails, fins, and noses are deadly, esp in crowded surf zones,
some boards are too slow for weak waves
other boards are too fast for powerful fast waves
balance and beauty is the goal
The boards that never worked for me were original spoons with reverse tail rocker, and early 70s Simmons inspired boards like the one Corky used at the US Championships. Total dogs… for me.
Some people loved those things (and still do).
Roy Stewarts/Stuart’s boards are asthetically unpleasant to me.
They also appear to allow only the most pedestrian (ironic as they don’t allow walking due to a miniscule sweetspot) form of surfing from their self-limiting design and mass.
I had one of those. Got it from a guy whose kids were using it as a snow sled (yikes!).
Luckily, he still had the fin for it. It was 8’10", and the first board I owned over 7’ since 1967. I got it around 1981. Used it as a “longboard” for a couple of years,
then sold it to someone for $80. It was pretty awful.
Yup. I think they were originally sold through Inter Island?
SammyA, did it happen to have blue lace pattern on the deck? (yes, it was awful. I knew it the first time I rode it.) It was stolen from me at St Auggie Bch. I figured it was resold and taken north.
this is the bomb and one of my favourite topics ill be back later got to go out to the shed and find worst board
In my book, anything by this company. Barry
No. Just blue pinstripes at the lap line on the deck, and a huge lam that went rail to rail.
If someone stole yours, they were doing you a favor, of sorts.

this is a dangerous picture. it could lead to the concept of Team Sup’n.
Imagine this going by you, 6 out of shape, middle aged ho dad’s paddling madly,
GoPro cameras bobbing from their Gath helmets.
one shudders…

Well i I do and had a version made by Steve Boeme and it is my favourite Longboard . It’s one of those magic boards which catches everything and surfs so well . Don’t knock it till you try it
cheers

I’m probably going to get raked across the hot coals for this but the Stinger was an absolute turd.
It was the latest greatest koolaid at the time. Those narrow black flexi pushed forward fins just made it even worse. Buttons and Liddel were doing some crazy stuff but just as the twin fin was coming out I remember people going back to basic pins and diamond tails.
haha WOW! good for jaws or cortes maybe?

I ain't raking any coals, but Ben Aipa still shapes Stingers of several sizes and seems to have plenty of happy riders. Just sayin'
Stingers are an acquired taste. I didn’t like them when I tried one back in 1980. It fits a certain style of surfing. Ben’s stinger longboards are popular, but they are a totally different animal.
But if you had seen Larry at Ala Mo, absolutely ripping it off the bottom of the wave, it was obvious that under the right feet, the Stinger was pretty d@mn hot. But isn’t that ever the case, you and I are not top-ten rated pros.
For sure and that was the problem. All the rippers ripped on those things, everyone else ehhh, maybe not so good. Thought it was kind of like “the emperor’s new clothes” kind of a thing. You’d be afraid to say they sucked for fear of being labled as someone that wasn’t “up to speed” with the latest greatest.
Kind of miss those days of watching someone do a massive spin out on a critical bottom turn. You don’t really see it as much.
