Mike, one of our Swaylocks, came to me to get a similar board shaped like the one I had done for Mike Fairmount. Somewhere in the translation of giving the blank rocker info to his pal to order, a miscommunication occured. Rather than a lowered rocker of 2" from center to nose, it came through a plus 2" from center to nose. From the deck, the blank made an abrupt rise, nearly vertical or a right angle. Now I could have shaped the blank and pocketed the money, but as a bonified shaper this is tantamount to blasphemy. The board wold have been a complete water pusher, ridden only at the very end of the tail or standing over center, ridden very flat, ski style utilizing the center rocker as if it was a tail rocker. Knowing what blank, with what rocker is one of the most important starting places for a decent shape to get a propper start. Outlines are a dime a dozen, but good rocker makes it or breaks it.
so, Jim, how about posting some excellent blank/rocker combos? we’d SURE appreciate it!
JR, there are so many variables for rockers (just look at Clarks catalog) that it isn’t practical to try. More likely the rockers NOT to use. Also according to a blanks thickness really alters what to use, this is why in the Clark catalog is has notations such as, “101Y centered on bottom for 10’9”
