X Fin?

What ever happened to the x fin that was designed by a surf shop owner in Haliewa, HI. which was shown in the magazines? It was primarily used on longboards, although some people used them on shortboards and from what I’d heard surfers that had installed the fin said that after a certain speed it seemed to switch gears and speed up. Anyone remember the manufacturer, or is it still being produced? Thanks a lot.

Do you mean this one? Picture’s sort of at a funny angle, but is that what you’re talking about? Sorry dunno anything about it - found it at http://www.surfresearch.com.au/f.html

The “X Fin” was designed by north shore shaper Scott Bucknell in the late 80s early 90s. He owned and produced Race Surfboards in Haleiwa. Haleiwa local Earl Dahlin, father of pro longboarder Kanoa Dahlin, was a proponent of them back then. I havent seen anyone riding them in a while though.

Yup that’s the one. Thanks guys. Anyone ever ridden 'em?

I had one on a longboard once. Felt pretty good down the line but I felt it didn’t draw through turns well, especially in small waves. Got a lot of funny looks from people but that’s another story. I ended up taking it out and replacing the set up with a single fin. Personally I liked the board a lot better after that, I only knew one other guy in my area who had one but his board was stolen before he could really get a handle on how it went.

Yeah I wouldn’t imagine it would do full-on carves and snaps, but I was wondering the possibility for all the tow-in boards.
