X-Glass Subsitute?

I should have paid attention. I recall seeing some laminations where the glass was placed in an “X” pattern across the deck. I was curious but couldn’t find out why this was done. Now I wonder if that could be done as a substitute for impact or X glass.

I want to use it under my next T-Flex and I’d like to use the lightest weight cloth I can find.

Anyone have a thought? Some 1 or 2 oz in an X pattern?

50 inch will be long enough for a shortboard. If your doing something longer you can stretch that which will make the fibers go more lengthwise at like 60 degrees or so. Pulling the corners will stretch it and I think you can probably go to about 8’ … maybe. Nice thing is it wont show and it’s just gotta be functional … not cosmetic.

So the same strengthening effect can be had? I’ve never seen X glass. Does it have fibers running in the 0, 45 and 90 degree directions? So you should have perhaps three layers?

thx

It’s just running 45’s. When we do a T-Flex, the wood is running 0 and then the top laminate is 0-90. So in the end you’ve got a true tri axial going when you have X under. You could also run two 2 oz layers bi axial under, especially if you can find uni’s at 2 oz. I think cstsales.com has that.

Or maybe acp-composites.com

This is good. I have a bunch of 2 oz. Not uni, but it should be fine. Many thanks.
