Yater Spoon fin question..

Howdy fellas! I’m seekin’ advice…

I recently picked up a used 10’ Yater Spoon. I got a True Ames Spoon fin for it figuring that’s the board’s original fin. My buddy recently recommended I use a Greenough 4a. I haven’t really ridden the board enough yet to critique the Yater fin. Just curious if anyone else has experience on this board with either fins, or knows why one might be better suited than the other.

BTW, I just cruise surfin’ small waves…

Here’s my board, and another photo of my fin and my buddy’s Greenough…

Is this the Yater fin you bought?

That is the classic Yater fin commonly found on the Sixties Spoons.
Rennie shaped an 8’ Baby Spoon for me a few years ago and it came with his “rudder” fin, which you can find on the True Ames website. I suppose that’s what Yater felt was the ‘right’ fin for the board? I wasn’t happy with it, and switched to a Greenough style that I had ground down from a generic fin I had on hand.

Not knowing what your experience and body type might be, I would still suggest trying both and just use what feels right for you. A 10’ Spoon is pretty damn big. So, experimenting with different fins might help you find your comfort zone with that board.

Sammy,

Yep, that’s the fin I got! 10’ Spoon is big I guess. I’m 6’ 1’', 205 lbs.

Maybe I will give the Greenough a try some time just to feel em both out…

Thanks for the reply!

Hi RyanPartridge -

The Yater longboard is a great all around board.  You'll likely find specific conditions for both fins.
