any takers in the NJ area? Even if you arn’t pro but you can produce a quality glass job i am just wanting to see you work so i can get better. Quite frankly my first glass job sucked. I really want to improve.
Confucious say: ‘Buy Glassing 101 and Master Glasser videos’ grasshopper.
grasshopper says they are very vague and didn’t help. nothing better than learning first hand.
From what I hear, the Master Glasser video teaches a lot.
not sure if any video can teach all the subtle nuances and tricks/techniques that the better glassers use daily…
I think just watching a good glasser go at his work can reveal some real surprises, especially if you are fresh off a glass job with a few flaws that you recognise.
After glassing over 100 boards, I got to watch our glasser go 4 at a time, using ONE batch of lam resin per side!
A few years down the line, I watched Haut’s glasser do 4 WINDSURF board decks (triple 6oz) in about 16 minutes, but he had a standing extra bucket of lam waiting for catalyst, which he mixed in after the second board…
That guy has been known to lam 6 logs within 20 minutes!
Yes, almost perfect glass jobs, but he still doesn’t do purple by choice!
I have Glassing 101 and it teaches enough to get started. I just keep plugging away and learn as I go. My glass jobs are getting better every board. I really concentrate on making the best laminating job I can so the rest becomes sooooo much easier. Nice flat laps and sand them good before hot coating made my boards go from horrible to pretty nice!
I read something that Dave Parmenter wrote that talks along the lines about having the ability to learn as you go and the desire to keep plugging away without asking a million questions to the good guys. I really believe that is the way to get good. When the experts do give you advice it all becomes more clear when you have a few boards of experience under your belt. There are some wrong ways I’ve done things that taught me quick!! Now when I read some of the tips here it is very clear exactly what the experts mean because I’ve done it a harder or stupider way. I usually go, “Ahhhhhhh that makes perfect sense!”
It could be I’m just so impatient I can’t wait to try glassing another!!! Just like shaping, I charged full steam ahead and practically sanded my entire first board. Just 2 horses and a computer print out of Parmenter’s How to Shape text off the internet. Almost a day of sanding!! I just couldn’t wait… When I got Shaping 101 and got to watch how to do it, I was going, “AHHHHHHHH, that’s how you do it!!! I’m gonna save sooo much time now!”
Just go for it brah!!! Search thru here for answers… Swaylock is an AWESOME information source but a lot of it may not mean much if you aren’t trying it hands on. Learn as you go…
