You`re strolling along the beach at sunset, stop to pick up a strangely formed bottle, and while rubbing away the encrusted sand, a small, soft voice from deep inside the vessel suddenly whispers, “Good master, I will grant you just one wish: the exclusive choice of your most favorite wave and surfcraft, with which to enjoy from this day forward, for the rest of your life.” Well… what will they be?

Waves anywhere from shoulder to head high. Gentle off shore breeze. A point break. Surfing a board that will turn like a 6’4" thruster, nose ride like a vintage 60’s, Con Ugly and board speed to make any section.Just my closest friends out and Brittany Spears on the beach waiting to towel me off !!!(Fred, your a dirty old man, I got socks older than her) R.I. surfer
I want a little of whatever it is you guys are smokin!

The “Magic Board” that’s in Tony Robert’s video,“GOING OFF” It skates on dry ground… It surfs where there is no surf… and it even turns into a beautiful gal…Herb.
…that and uncrowded J-Bay with the 7’4" Lopez linked below. I havent traveled outside the Hawaiian Islands to surf, but of the waves that I have surfed here…I would choose that thin peeling left on the soutwest shore of Kauai that starts with an “I”. The hardest part would be to choose what board to have. I have used a 6’6" hybrid fish, 7’0" bonzer funboard and 9’0" longboard there that have all worked unreal. If its where I was the only one there…I’d have to go with the fish. That board made this 46 yr old feel like 20 again. But man that bonzer was so much fun…and I had such long noserides on that 9’0"…oh shucks…

Another haunting question, Dale. I thought R.I. surfer answered perfectly for me, except for the Brittany Spears part ;-), although if it was her or nobody then I’d keep her. But the question has stuck with me for the past couple of days as I stumble through the inanities of life, and while I’m bred a (SoCal) point wave surfer I’d have to say this question takes me elsewhere. The wave: Let’s say Waikiki. If I had to narrow it to one break it would be Number Threes. The Waikiki area is one of a very few magic power spots. Malibu is another, and I’ve felt a bit of that at Raglan, Burleigh, Waimea, and Noosa . A place where there is a good wave, and the surrounding land touches me in some weird emotional way. These days you’d have to ignore the buildings, but I could live with that for no people in the water. Waikiki gets the nod for warm water and Diamond Head. Not the best surf? With no others in the water there is no rush. Catch it when it’s good, don’t worry about missing prime conditions. Nobody in the water probably means nobody paying much attention, so how good I surf wouldn’t make any difference. It would just be fun. The surfboard: Burn the witch! In the above outlined situation I’d take an 8’6" performance design/shaped soft board, single or 2 plus 1 finned. No, not any of the current Doyle/BZ blobs, which to my eye haven’t changed since the 70’s except for slapping on 3 fins instead of one. Haven’t seen a Surflight board yet but that looks promising. It wouldn’t be about me seeing what manuevers I could do - would be about me feeling the motion of riding a wave. Of course, if I actually got that wish I’d probably get there and wish I took a fish… Nels
I’d use my 9’7" singlefin on the following wave and conditions: A tropical location with a slight offshore breeze, a magic wave that starts as a slow building 4 footer, and gradually rolls into a screaming 10 foot hollow tube ride, spitting me out into the arms of a scantily clad 21 year old Polynesian woman named “Lei-ya”>>> You`re strolling along the beach at sunset, stop to pick up a strangely > formed bottle, and while rubbing away the encrusted sand, a small, soft > voice from deep inside the vessel suddenly whispers, “Good master, I > will grant you just one wish: the exclusive choice of your most favorite > wave and surfcraft, with which to enjoy from this day forward, for the > rest of your life.”>>> Well… what will they be?
This is too damned hard, guys…Dale, why is it that I always feel like your questions put me back into college philosophy 101, and I’ve got to pick my accursed soul/brain for a good response?! I CAN’T pick JUST ONE wave and surf craft- the variety is what I love about surfing. I even can deal with the occasional broken board and get over it. If I said that I’d like to go back in time with a cherry pin by dick brewer and hit pipe at 8 foot with no one out, I couldn’t say that it was fantasy…because I did EXACTLY that one day (a precious day in my life). It was in the early seventies…after a killer swell, and everyone was surfed out. I got up early, and was gifted with perfect,EMPTY, “small” pipeline for two full hours…by myself…NO ONE out! (and I’m not even goofyfoot!). That will probably never happen again (for ANYBODY)…ESPECIALLY these days. I don’t know…maybe perfect uluwatu with only a few Australians out (with ANYTHING I could get my hands on in the way of surf vehicles)…Maybe an Indestructable glass bubble and go over the falls at maxed out teahupo’o and survive. (with Britney Spears on the beach to clean up my vomit!!!). How about surfing a place that rarely gets good surf, but it turns out to be an impossibly perfect day?!..EH,EH?!! This is too difficult…I can’t deal. maybe just PEACEFUL Waikiki (like one guy mentioned) with all your friends. Hey, wait, I’ve done that, too!!!..HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE…Aloha a hui hou…TOM! P.S…it wouldn’t involve surfmats…(I’m ONLY KIDDING, DALE…aloha…T.
I must really be getting old…my fantasy wave is anywhere there is no crowd…surfing anything that will float…and I still feel most women and surf trips mix like oil and water!
