Your Fav Surf Films?

There was a great thread before about surf music which introduced some new artists that i’d never heard of and which turned out to be an awesome history lesson into the music of surfing. So why not a thread on surf movies?

An argument on which one is the best is fruitless; it would be like arguing who is better: Megadeth or Anthrax - 'cause we all know the answer to that one.

So, Im just going to list the surf movies that i most enjoy watching over and over and over again. And in no particular order:

Thicker Than Water

Siestas and Olas

Endless Summer

Morning of the Earth

Sprout

If you’ve not seen any of these - go to the video store now and get it. Ive got to say Siestas and Olas stands out to me for so many reasons, maybe its the integration of longboarders with short boarders, something that has been lacking in most surf films. Plus, Mexico is just the place for surf trips. Burritos and Point breaks. Also the ending at the mysterious Petacoco break is just awesome.

Hope to see some posts of movies ive not seen so i can enjoy those too.

i’ll add:

Singlefin: Yellow

A Brokedown Melody

and of course…

Stylemasters

…and who could forget “North Shore”!..

“shaped it, glassed it, sanded it…the whooooooole trip!” ~ Turtle

Arizona surfers are the $hit! wonder if Greg Loehr has been gettin’ wet at the ol’ desert wave pool lately??

Crystal Voyager

Bunyip Dreaming

Sons of Fun

The Green Iguana

Morning of the Earth

My Eyes Won’t Dry

Morning of the Earth

Longer

Adrift

Single Fin Yellow

I’ll throw down for “Shelter”

“Sipping Jetstreams” because it is so well filmed and for me it is always the people and cultures that I remember the longest about surf trips

and “Gorillas in the Fog” cause it is from home and all my friends are in it. (I don’t expect anyone to have ever seen or heard of this one)

Cheers

Big Wednesday!

when the boys get the nod from Gerry Lopez at the end…

hoo… magic!

5 Summer stories

Sea for Yourself

Super Session

Plastic Fantastic Machine

The Golden Breed

Surfing Hollow Days

Litmus

Point Break!!!

Seriously? Shelter, Morning of the Earth, Stylemasters (love the narration), the Seedling, Riding Giants (minus the Sam George sections…sorry, he’s way to “gushy” me), Searching for Tom Curren, anything w/ Gerry Lopez, and the surfermag video clip of Jamie O’Brien and Mike Stewart sharing a bomb at Pipe. Jamie’s interview after the wave is classic!

yes…the north shore…state surfing champion of arizona goes to hawaii and earns a spot in the main event of the pipeline masters and should have beat that sneaky laird…jerry should have beat his ass or have occy drop him off in the burning cane fields…i do love that flick…here are some others

september sessions…endless summer I and II…all the drive thru movies…somewhere anywhere everywhere…the secret machine…whats really going wrong…big wednesday…there are obviously many more

Chasing the Lotus,by Weaver/Wills.

sorry gerry

I concur. But CTL is footage by Wills and Weaver. The film was made a friend, Greg Schell. His first film “The Far Shore” is also really solid.

Other gems on my list:

Five Summer Stories

Ultimate Sessions

The Free Way

Dog Town and Z-Boys (skate/surf)

Shelter

I love all the Moonshine Conspiracy films. In fact, when’s the next one being released?

Second Thoughts - just because it’s different

Riding giants - because I like hearing Greg Noll cuss up a storm

Singlefin: yellow - beautiful movie / good concept

Big Wednesday and Point Break - because of Gary Busey

Sipping Jetstreams…

A friend of mine gave it to me and I wached the dvd at least 10 times in the 2 weeks that I borrowed it! That’s how much I liked it. The editing pace, the shots, the people, it’s just awesome. I can’t think of a better recently released film…

Then all the moonshine conspiracy films are great. I love a Brokedown Melody and Thicker than Water…

I also find the Drive Thru movies very amusing to watch but I think it’s mainly because of Donavon and how funny he sometimes is…

I can’t believe no one has mentioned “Free Ride.” Maybe I’m the only responder old enough to remember that one? Another favorite, at least from that time, was “Fantasea,” really only two things about it stick out from that movie. Shaun Tomson’s opening barrel ride where you’re looking into the tube and don’t even know he’s in there until he come’s blasting out, and Fitzy’s classic speed lines at J-bay. I think someone mentioned “Sons of Fun,” that one and the others in that series of Billabong vids were great. Another good one is “Filthy Habits,” especially Occy at G-land. I like “Singlefin Yellow” also, mainly for Bonga taking on Pipe on that big yellow beast!

Sprout gets my vote for best cure for insomnia. ZZZZZZZZ.

How come nobody’s list includes Blue Crush? Point Break? North Shore? And what was that really cheesy one about a kid knocked out in a contest at Pipe who wakes up in 1905 & meets the Duke?

north shore and point break are on some lists…we did seem to forget blue crush…the best worst movie ever
