Your Fav Surf Films?

okay, all mine are taken. I gotta respond and keep this alive with some favorite excerpts:

  • Shelter - Donovon riding the Bonzer - falling over in the shore break (mason jennings song in the background)
  • Riding Giants - "You can't do that shit...thats impossible" -Bull
  • The Far Shore - "Craig is a good guy to have around cuz he's big. But he eats a lot."
  • Endless Summer 2 - "Surf, Surf, everyday, Surf " "...When I surfing, I not think about the problems..." - Walter
  • Sprout - When Alex Gnost botches a carve, and jumps off directly into the curl and bodysurfs the rest of the wave.
  • Litmus - pretty obvious, but the fish surfing scenes.
Also, did anyone mention Glass Love? The opening scene with Daize Shayne is incredible.

“you can’t step twice on the same piece of water” way out on fringe

‘Riding Giants’ scary waves and greg always gets my vote

‘morning of the earth’ classic

‘step into liquid’ it’s just fun

‘crystal voyager’ george G cruises

‘seadreams’ music mixes with images

‘waves to freedom’------mike c bodysurfing pipe and the bay

The Smut Peddler. A film By Christian Fletcher that Herbie refused to sell (I think). Saw it drunk at a party one night a few years back. I was not the same afterwards.

How about “The Gift” by Perry Farrell…he surfs right?

0…and Apocolipse Now…great surf film.

What’s Really Going Wrong…for the music. Black Francis!

Fantastic Plastic Machine

Morning of the earth

Sprout ( the the exeption of the awful dialog " A pod of California log sliders" possibly the worst ever put into a movie.)

Third edition of Free Ride

Step into Liquid

Single Fin Yellow

The Endless Summer Trilogy

Surfing for Life

And I can’t believe that no one has mentioned …

Beach Blanket Bingo!

lost island of Santosha…

the only surf movie i’ve seen in the theater

5th Symphony Document = just really different

Back To The Front = excellent East Coast vid

All the Drive-Thru series= comedy

Focus, All the old Lost videos and Tweak Freaks

Jack McCoy’s stuff is always fun too

Mad Wax…

Sipping Jetstreams captures Barbados like no other flick out there. Same swell seen in Campaign II and featured in Transworld Dec 05 issue. Last time I was there, paddled out with the Sipping Jetstreams soundtrack blasting outta Smokey’s!

Surf Nazis must Die !

These aren’t my favorites, but they’re really good and no one’s mentioned them:

*The Endless Summer Revisited. Great kinda “making of” documentary. Love all the interviews and stories behind the films. Historically significant, check it out if you have an interest in surf history.

*The Pipe Masters. Peralta scores again! Great history and the Lopez parts alone are worth the cost of admission!

Anyone else notice how Shelter is kinda Moring of the Earth re-hashed? Both great flicks though!

In no particular order…

Crystal Voyager

Innermost Limits of Pure Fun

Sprout

Longer

Adrift

Dolphin Glide

Hot Generation

Free-N-Easy

Shelter

Off the Wall 1 & 2

Brokedown Melody (but only for the bodysurfing footage)

Morning of the Earth

Sea of Joy

I concur with Nico_SB.

Hot Generation and Innermost Limits of Pure Fun!

I also enjoy Bruce Brown’s lesser known movies such as Slippery When Wet and Surfing Hollow Days. Love seeing the classic California spots in the “old days”.

Punk Rock Surfers (not joking)

Thicker Than Water

The Angry Sea

i can’t believe no one has yet mentioned “LINES FROM A POEM”!!!

  1. end section of Innermost Limits : “the coming of the Dawn” , most incredible surf cinematography of all time. Heaps better than the more highly regarded “echoes”. Innermost was pretty much a home movie tacked on to the front of Coming of the Dawn to make it to a feature length program.

  2. Classic scene in Freeride when Shaun Tomson has the dialogue crossing the bridge at haleiwa “I don’t think I’ve reached my peak yet” and then chats to the local gas station dude.Where has all the dialogue gone in surf movies? Also Rabbit 'studying" in NS squat.

  3. Last scene of Fantasea with George riding mats. POV footage and george’s V/O: “you’ve got to drive it wide open”. Great mantra.

shit yeah, Lines from a Poem. Beautifully shot and scored. wegener’s surfing shits all over his section in Sprout.

I thought Slippery When Wet was a hoot…

apart from that? All the above… My dvd collection is larger than my quiver… alas…

True, but such a feeble attempt. Nothing could ever re-capture the spirit of Morning of the Earth. Plus annoying social commentary by Ben Harper(!?) and others made the video extremely lame in my opinion - i used to watch with the sound off.

dont forget this summer two feature length films on the big screen that will earn millions and millions

surfs up…the world championships of penguin surfing

fantastic four: the rise of the silver surfer…cant wait for that one
