I am a first time surfboard builder. In 2017, I took a Grain sponsored wooden board builder class in San Fransisco because I felt as a life long surfer, to be complete, I should build a surfboard. The board turned out really great. However, I procrastinated glassing it because I didn’t have the confidence in my ability to so and living in a resort environment didn’t lend itself to taking on a surfboard glassing project. I even considered farming the glassing out to a professional but didn’t because I felt I needed to do it so it would be my hands that built my board start to finish. My career as a resort property manager, a nomad of sorts, took me to wonderful destinations but no good place for a completing a glassing project.
Flash forward to 2025, I am 74 and retired and I found the time and place to finally glass my surfboard. However I need a little advice so I posted my opportunity and am waiting to hear back. I want to take my board out and try to catch at least one wave this summer with my board when I visit family in Southern California this summer.
