1/2 the weight, and 2x the strength of glass cloth...................

“T-Cloth” get you some.

Why not?      Not with the world, but a few of the members.

Mystro T!

You tease us “non baggers” shame!

Now I tease you.

3 OF A KIND

A 1967 9’4" Hansen Super Light, 10’ 1966 Hansen Master MEK and Sandy Barret’s '66 Team board. “Hansen Factory finest from the Golden Age of Surfing … Thank you Don Hansen, Rusty Miller and Mike Doyle.”

A huge thank you to Peter Blyth for sharing these beauties with us!

Matt,

Don’t feel bad, I’m a non-bagger too.

There’s a long list of available fabrics that would be suitable , yet are not generally used in composite surfboards. Some have been around for many years , but are not target marketed like the better known fabrics . The go-to fabric when I was a young apprentice was dynel cloth …many older guys here would be quite familiar with it…the other obvious one would be hemp cloth , which has been used and discarded for surfboards…not sure why? Henry Ford built the first T-Model using hemp , but politics and prohibition got in the way…then theres industrial silk , which has quite an amazing strength to weight ratio…nylons of all description seem to making a comeback…Xynole…polyacrylonitrile…burlap…there still around , but it’s a matter a production viability and marketing…when a new fabric hits the composite list , it’s usually and old fabric with a new name , and a new marketing plan…I wouldn’t doubt the qualities of your fabric Bill…give it a hipster name , and people will buy it.

Bill, I was gonna jump all over this but I’ve been a little depressed lately, I finally had time to start the second of three “avante garde/leading edge/high tech/breakthrough” boards, then…   …well, something hit the surf media.   Now I can’t even get motivated to finish the tail shape (split or closed?)  It doesn’t even matter at this point- it’s all been done.  Worked with Ekstrom/Kawahara on this particular thing a couple years now, and it’s kind of a knock, off of a knock off, of an ancient alaia…   Sigh*

5’10" x 18-7/8" x 2-5/8" 35.7L    NON-pinched rails, inverted vee, multiple fin boxes, even had my fresh sheet of G-10 ready to roll

Oh, I just set up one of my rooms for more epoxy work, and came across a “new” (old, very old) Gast pump from my Dad’s estate- and it works still, surviving the fire in my garage, (then came across some pretty nice stretchy bag/ply material, was going to lay up both sides of the board, was going to bag it all (both sides,) at once, etc. etc. but, alas, it’s all been done before…

…third pic was a board Ekstrom/Tak/Morey consigned me to build 2-1/2 years ago, but it’s bigger.  First sup i’ve seen like it, but that doesn’t mean it IS the first, no doubt it’s ALL BEEN DONE BEFORE…  (yaaawwwnnn…)  …oh yeah, it HAULED ASS and was quite loose and held a straight line when paddling, what a shock that 8’4"  board was…

“Oh well, nice try kid…   NEXT!”

i’m listening Bill.

I’m sure thirdshade and I could have some fun with this!

Here’s my case

Because I wouldn’t just talk about it.

I would do this to it.

followed by this

Then post all results on this thread  …referring to it as nothing but T cloth and compare it to the sauce

Then for the guys who don’t trust lab results   I’d do this and hit a 50% volume fraction of fiber

Followed by this (cause when you’re gunna do something damn well do it right) <postcure>

followed by this over and over again.

Sufficient test plan from a garage builder I hope?   :))))

I’m guessing polypropolene core ?..that’s a good demonstration of the importance of the core , as well as the skin…although , in the context of a surfboard , it’s overkill…kiteboards are a different animal.

That’s right… I was just a youngster.  Don’t feel bad.  Tonight at work I was called a “dinosaur.”  To add insult to injury, a nurse with whom I work reminded me that at the time of the Sylmar earthquake, she was 4 YEARS OLD!!!

At 1,8g/cm3 and Rt=5000MPa carbon T700 is 1,5 x lighter than glass and more than 2x stronger (by weight)… In tensil. Flexural strengh, what is interesting for us, dépend more of specific stiffness of skin. Finaly lot of old school material, many wood in first, are more than 2x lighter than glass/polyester and more than 2x stronger (by weight) in flexural…

Bill,
Of course I would be interested. Does the weave show? Can it be used with UV resin? Always interested in making wood fins stronger especially the thick fins.
Dave

From all the hints you’ve posted, it’s easy to guess what your “mystery material” is.

I’ll be shocked if you have any awareness of the material in question.   So please, give it a shot.        Tell me what you think it is.      It would please me no end, if you got it.

I’m thinking Carbon Fiber

Ladies panty hose? Not messin with you, Bill. Having fun. Mike

Clear carbon fiber?     I’ll PM the info to you.      Don’t share.

Sounds like I’m wrong. But I’d still like to know and won’t share.

indeed [in oz , we would use the  w word for it … likewise , lots of noise and effort , with a minimal  result ]

another "six pages of froth , with no photos "  type thread

thanks , Kayu , for sharing information …  what the internet , and surfboard design sites , are useful for , lest we forget !

Personally , I don’t see the point of using the internet for  ’ I  'could ’ tell you … but I WON’T " - type posts . [ … NO-ONE benefits from THAT ! ]

  cheers !
