Would someone be willing to divulge the method for double hot coat that avoids a second sanding? thx
like i said,it's tricky tate,
first it takes two batches of resin one lam and one standard hotcoating resin.
hotcoat the side(s)w/ the lam batch first, just like a normal hotcoat but no wax in the resin.
just as the batch starts to gel it will frogeye.
now this is the important part, you don't want it to be in the gel state, but just to that point.
mix the batch of standard hotcoating resin, and pout it onto the board, and let it flow out evenly.this batch should be genious.
the best way to pour it out is like in a brush stroke pattern, from nose to tail or lengthwise.
lightly even it out with a brush and let set-up.the froggies will for the most part dissappear under the second coat.
i always add a bit of extra surfacing agent to the second batch.
when i first started this trick,i use to add a 1/2 dose of surfacing agent to the first batch ,just to ease the process, but don't anymore.
it's okay to add a bit of sa to the first batch ,as long as you pour out the second coat before the first coat sets. the second coat will lift the wax up thru the second coat.
the cat. ratios don't have to be hot either, just standard mixes here.the heat from the first coat will set off the second like it's a hotter mix.

what you end up with ,if done correctly is a very thick hottie.
…now is very difficult to obtain a thicker (1/2" or more) stringer blank
you should be a good customer (of the blower)
Mahalo Herb! Thats a bit of trickery!
I'm using UV so maybe catalyze the first hotcoat then as it starts to go hit it with the second then flash it in the sun after the wax rises?
Aloha DMP,
There must be another person I’m thinking about because it was definitely in the 80s. I’m thinking about a guy named Sam who is a goofy foot surfer. Gotta be pretty old by now because he was old back then.
Say hi to Sueo and Dean for me. I hope Dean comes to our HS re-union this year. Do you know Kamuela Aea? He is also a good friend. Saw him on the trip to Kauai.
Take care, Harry
Aloha Harry,
I'll say howzit to Dean and Sueo.
Yeah pops is a goofy but by 1980 he was definately not surfing and we couldn't drag him to Oahu. It was work all week 9-5 and on the weekends they were diving with tanks and nets for red fish and trying to kill themselves by diving for black coral with complete disregard to dive tables. I was the boat rat and would light everyone cigarettes between tanks because my hands were dry.
I can't recall a Kamuela Aea. Got to ask my dad. I inherited his poor memory for names.
Aloha Aukai
Howzit DMP, For big Hanalei the main thing is down the line speed and I am sure you know that. If the Aframe take off spot between Flat Rock and the point is workig then that is the spot to be to make it all the way through the bowl. I used to love big Hanalei in my younger days. Aloha and catch one for me,Kokua
Aloha Kokua,
Yep you know the drill turn and burn! Next one is yours!
Howzit DMP, Thanks I appreciate that. Aloha,Kokua
yes,
uv powder/resin has made this process easier to handle,still...........tricky.
i have yet to ruin one............but i do put a lot of concentration into this phase of the glassing.
another form of double hottie is to do two hots and two sands.if you do it correctly, the second sandout only requires a 320,possibly a 220 grit sand out.
i don't sand out my decks at all these days...........it's a waste of time, energy, and strength.

Thank you all for the tips. It’s been done for awhile, just been too busy to take some pictures.
I went with 6/6/4 deck, warp/S/warp. Bottom is 6/4 warp. Next one will be 2x6 bottom as the board has good weight, just a tad lighter than I expected. Lost some weight sanding.
Board is 10’3" x 20 3/4" x 3 1/2" Surfblanks 10’5" green. Also I probably could have gotten a few extra lbs. with a larger stringer.
whoa - yep, that's a gun, for sure!
great job d m p
the dble hotcoat is a great tip and should be done on all bigger boards (something lost in the past i guess)

That is a really nice board! Got any photos of the rocker? Nose and tail width measurements?Nice gun! I bet it will get you into the wave easy.
Mahalo Huie,
Lotsa resin in this one!
Thanks for the compliment. I don’t have enough room in my shaping room to get a good rocker shot. I went with mostly the blanks natural rocker but added more tail rocker. It was a rush to shape the board, got super pumped thinking what it is for!
Nose is 9 3/4". Tail is 11 1/4". I’m thinking I should have made the board wider at center with more nose. These long ones are a different animal to shape. As they get real long the outline really eats up width. But for as narrow as it might look it is paddle board thick, no f**king around with this one. Tired of missing some of the outside ones.
interesting about using the lam resin for the 1st coat
i was taught to pore some resin down and squege the hole board then squege off all the resin so to be sure to fill in all the little fibers then coat the rails (useing uv resin, all sanding resin) take out side and flash but not to much then hot caot the hole thing
ive never had any bonding issues between the two coats
i was always under the impression that as long as the first coat is in the proper stage of setting off then when you add the net layer they should bond together with no problem
any thoughts
wow, great post, great board, great info!!! love it!
something that inspire me shaping, building boards are these kind of guns. I hope one day build lots of them.
I´m not ready yet, but I´m working hard!
well done DMP!

how does one go about ordering a different stringer in say a USBlank?
I will be ordering a blank soon through the local shop so, obviously, I need to ask them.
I want to build a 9’6" ish… is the consensus still at least a 3/4" stringer?
IMO, yes, as a minimum. Consider a 3/4 inch Bass stringer, with black glue. Bass is a little stronger than RW, in tensile load. Always try to stack the odds in your favor. Me, I’d use two 3/4 inch RW’s, chambered for lightness. I just like the look of a wide stringer on a gun.
