Aloha,
Any suggestions from those that have actually glassed a Mavericks or Waimea sized gun. I've got a poly to glass with uv polyester. This is going to be for very large waves.
Double 6 top and bottom?
Mahalo.

Hozit DMP, Which glasser did you talk to,J. Delaney or Imua? Aloha,Kokua
i go double 6oz deck with a full 6oz patch, essentially making it triple 6 deck.
double 6er bottom or a single 8oz works.
i also double hotcoat the top and bottom for better sanding,wt., and strength.
a double hottie is tricky,at least the way i do it ,but the results are superior.
herb.
Mahalo Herb,
I'm going to make a 10' or 10'2" big wave board. Big surf, big bumps, strong wind. My 9'2" eps was too light and too small on the last swell.
I just got a blank and talked to the glasser. He basically came up with a schedule like yours. Only dfference being doing a triple lap. 6 bottom, 6/6/4 or 6 top, then flip and glass the bottom one more time with 6. Not sure about the extra laping. I might go with deck rail channels instead.
Thanks for the double sanding tip. I'm going to give it a try.
I agree with the triple 6 deck, and double 6 bottom. I thought I was the only one doing the double hotcoat thing. I do it so that I can do a precission block sanding, and create the most flawless surface possible on the finished board. What are you doing for stringers? The ''old gun standard'' was two 3/4 inch RW's. Buzzy Trent preferred three 3/4 inch stringers glued as a center bundle in a typically 11 foot gun.
sounds like alot of wood. Do you remember how much those boards weighed?
As I recall, Buzzy's boards weighed about 42 pounds. My boards of that '63/'67 period, weighed 38 pounds, and were 10' 7'' and 10' 5''.
where are you located DMP?
Mahalo Bill,
I went into the blank wharehouse and was hoping for at least 3/4". The biggest blank he had was a Surfblanks 10'5" green with a 3/8" stringer. Kind of small but will probably go 6,6,6 deck with one being S and rail channels on the deck.
I could search for a better option on Oahu but this is going to get shaped and rode as soon as possible. We are in a full blown pumping wave-a-thon. The surf has been eating surfboards like a a wood chipper, lots of broken boards.
I remember looking at the old photos that my dad has. Buzzy Trent, Wally Forseith, Ricky Grigg and a bunch of others I couldn't put a name too looked like animals. Solid, fit, and Buzzy had a crazy look in his eye. I asked my dad why they all looked like they lifted weights. He said it was because they did everytime they surfed.
I'm on the north shore of Kauai.

Aloha Kokua,
I talked to Dave today about the glassing. His triple lap idea sounds pretty good.
Aloha DMP, Kokua told me who you are, and said to stop by last month when I was in Hanalei. Sorry we never made it by the station. I have a few friends working on Kauai… Sueo Higa and Dean Lake, maybe you know them.
I used to surf Courts everyday in the 80’s and 90’s and your dad used to surf out there a lot. He and a few other older guys like Kimo Hollinger were always quite but could surf really good. I never knew that he was in the same group of old timers as Kimo. I haven’t seen him for a long time, and I hope he is doing OK.
Just wanted to say hi.
Take care, Harry
Why not do the 2x6oz on the bottom in one lam?
bill,
i learned this stuff from guys just like you.
any gun over say 8-5 should have at least a 1/2" stringer otherwise you're wasting your time and money.
i prefer redwood..............but basswood will work on a last ditch effort.
double hotcoating.......... doesnot mean double sanding!!!!!!!
like i said tricky...........bill knows what i'm talking about.
my present 8-2 has a double hottie on it.
it has a 1/2" basswood stringer,double 6 bottom ,double 6 deck with loads of patch work,including a 3/4 6oz deck patch.
it weighs in at 18lbs w/o the fins or wax.
herb
you can taylor,
i did on my 8-2 gun.

Howzit DMP, Dave is a great glasser and shaper also and what ever info he gives you is right on. I helped him out when he broke his hand and we respect each others work. Aloha,Kokua
Most of the Mavericks Guns I have seen have three 1/4 middle stringers=3/4wood and 6+4oz top& bottom with 2x overlapped rails. Big guns don’t get much foot traffic so if you want it heavy go 2x 6oz top& bottom. Any thing over 24lbs is going to be a bear to lug around, I aim for 18-20lbs on 10’-10’4"+ OB guns with 2x6oz top & 1x 6oz bottom and 22-24lbs on Mav-guns with 6+4oz on both sides.
Have fun.
Aloha Harry,
Our department is small and I know Sueo and Dean very well. Sueo should be getting ready to retire soon. Will emailed me and told me you and your brother might be stopping by. No worries, maybe next time.
Pops is doing well. He retired about 5 years ago and keeps super busy with his bonsai collection and weight lifting. He has a super rigid schedule of plant training and weight training.
I'm guessing you used to see my dad in the 50's and 60's at courts. He moved the whole family over from Oahu in 70 and never went back. He also had a garage sale in about 72 or 73 and what boards he couldn't sell he gave away. Said he was done with surfing and hasn't surfed since. No fan fare, never talked about it ever again. I had no idea he was anybody in the surfing world until I was older. I always thought the uncles were just friends. Peter Cole, Kimo, Blue Makua, Pops Aikau, George Downing, Butch Van Artsdalen, Buff, Pat Curren, etc. They'd stop by the house and have beer or just talk story when on Kauai.
Aloha Aukai
Mahalo Ian,
Thats good info! I was a bit disappointed when I saw the blank with that skinny stringer. The foam was also a lighter density (green), but no biggie it's for me and I'm making lemonade with them lemons! So most likely 2x6 bottom and at least 6, 6, 4 deck.
The board is for big Hanalei. Which is more of a Mavericks type of wave than a Waimea wave when it gets big. Board is going to need to turn on the wave face and race down the line. No big straight take offs. You got to get in early as possible and high line the wave to make it.
Thanks for posting the picture. It looks like the boards get a bunch of use. I also give you guys massive props for wearing leashes when its macking. I know its almost mandatory at Mavericks. We are lucky that the water is warm and your board doesn't get smashed when you lose it.
Great stuff -
Thanks Herb. I was wondering if there was a point to the “double lam.” I’ve done up to five layers of glass at once… not that easy to wrap the rails… Ha! Now I’m about 2x6oz both sides with a 45/45 patches on the deck.
