I’ve just come across this Skil planer for sale locally via eBay and was interested to see if anyone had any more information on it than the seller - “Planer, works well. Good order.”
Why not bother/what’s wrong with it? Sure, the Skil’s I’ve seen in shapers hands in photo’s are silver/aluminium bodied while this one’s plastic, but is that a big deal? What else is wrong with it?
And what “Towa”? Didn’t see any other ad’s on that page for a “Towa” brand planer?
None really McDing, call it not-so-professional interest. And who knows, it might have turned out to be the deal of the century, in which case I might do a 180 and bid on the farker…
Am not in the market myself for a planer right now - was just curious to know what makes a good/bad one as shaping equipment, and specifically what was wrong with that one in particular. Would be useful to know if I do find myself in the market for one, one day.
Anyway, 'auction’s ended with only one bid ($10); anyone round here pick it up for themselves? Would be interested to hear how it turns out for you.
Take a look at pictures of a Skil 100, Modified Hitachi, Pete Cassica’s Modified Bosch etc. read up on them. Find out why they are considered the go to planers for shapers around the Globe. If you’re considering buying a planer that doesn’t have at least some of those features; You will be disappointed with your purchase. In looking at the one you posted; I don’t even see how a shaper could hold it comfortably, let alone adjust to depth on the fly. It’s up to you to do your research and then compare any future purchase to the real deal. Plenty of info on the archives. It’s not the tesponsibility of guys like me to tell you what’s wrong with every planer on Ebay.
Jesus McDing, ease up! If you don’t want to join the conversation, don’t. But like I tell my 4yo son, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
I’ve been on Swaylock’s for over four years and have read just about every thread there is on planers - Skil, Bosch, Makita, whatever. I just thought some people on here might have an opinion on something I found while trawling eBay (turns out nobody did, except one grumpy old fucker who forgot to take his meds). Fair enough. Move on to the next (hopefully more interesting) thread.
No . You just need to educate yourself enough to know what makes any planer suitable or even usable for surfboard shaping. Instead of asking folks to evaluate every $10 deal of the century you see on Ebay. Find out what the standard is and evaluate it yourself. Seriously. I have been on Sways as long as you though so what do I know?
