10'1"Y Blank, what to do, what to do

Hey Everyone, OK, I’ve done it and bought my first blank. i got a blank shipped up with another shapers load getting a 10 1 Y triple stringer. I need a new longboard and don’t want to pay 700+ for a new one. I feel confident in shaping methods but can’t decide what to do with the blank. The triple stringer came differently than I expected (although I was not disappointed); it has 3 cedar stringers, the center stringer is 3/8" I think and the other 2 are offset by 1" at the nose and continue back until about the last third of the board where they sweep out to the rails. I’ve got a picture on a different computer and will post if anyone is interested.

Anyway, i’m not sure why exactly the stringers were glued up this way other than looks. Any hints? Also, there were two marks up near the nose on was hand written -1/2N (which I interpret as less nose rocker by 1/2") the other marking is painted on with stencils (FH-2-1/8) I’m not sure if this is just a manufacture mark or something to do with the rocker…again any hints? With the board laying on the floor, I measure about 4.5 inches up to bottom of tail and 4.5 inches up to bottom of nose, rocker looks fairly continuous through out board.

So I’m not sure exactly what to shape (a good all around board, a nose rider, or …). I’m wondering if the rocker/stringer setup would favor one style of board over another.

Any help is greatly appreciated, Billy

I remember the excitment with getting my first blank. The reduced nose rocker will improve this boards noseriding ability. Not to sound negative but starting on a triple stringer is going to give you alot more problems than you may have anticipated. You’ll find yourself with a lot of extra work pulling the wood in flush with the foam. The 10’1’'Y has a lot of foam in it so expect a lot of mowing. Try to use your planer as much as possible on the rail bands and continue them up into the stringers. When you screen your rails you will find it helpful to have a very sharp japanese plane or you can use a new razor blade to pull the stringers back in line with the foam. My true feelings are thet you should try to trade this to the guy you ordered with. He’ll be stoked to have your triple stringer, and your first attempt at shaping will not be frustrated by dealing with the extra work of having to shape 3 stringers.
