i was thinking about buying a used 12" bench planer for making tailblocks. does anyone have some suggestions on what brand to get?

If your talking about portable thickness planners , the Hitachi is pretty good. You can sharpen the blades easy. The Porter Cable has these cheesy narrow blades that you throw away after use. I have both tools and they both plane wood very well.

I REALLY like my Ryobi 13"… Paul http://http://www.swaylocks.com/resources/Detailed/397.html

I REALLY like my Ryobi 13"…>>> Paul>>> I’ve got a Ridgid 13" that I have been happy with and it has had great reviews in woodworking trade mags. Home Depot sells them. Also, they have lifetime warrantee. I have had bad luck with other Ryobi products (cordless driver & router) and rather not go back to them.
