12'6" SUP Lam

I have a couple of rookie questions and need some help, please.

1.  How much epoxy needed to lam the top or bottom of a 12'6"x29"x6 3/4" sup with 6oz ?

2.  What is the epoxy:pigment ratio in this case?

3.  Want to keep the top and bottom the same color w/o a pinline, How much do I lap and will it appear darker at the lap?

Thanks in advance,

John

1.  I used to mix a quart for a 10-0 x 22 longboard, Clark foam, so you could scale from that.  I have very little waste resin, so if you're the type or use a technique which wastes a lot, don't come crying to me if you come up short.

2.  The pigment ratio is whatever produces resin that makes the color you want to end up with.  No rules about this; pigments vary and we have no clue what color or whose pigment you're using.

3. Whether one color will show through another depends on what color you're trying to cover, and what color you cover it with.  Dark over light might work, but you have to have a very even hand on the rails to get the thickness of resin just right.  Suggest that if you have to ask, you not try it.

Hey Guys

I lammed a 11'6" SUP with epoxy not long ago.

2 x 6 oz deck and bottom and laped both layers so I really had 4 layers on the rails, but did one layer at a time.

First layer with pigment, second clear,

For memory, I think I used 1 litre for each layer.

For the pigment, I used 1% of mixed resin by weight.

Color turned out so you could just see the stringer through the color but it depends on what brand you use.

I used paint pigment from the hardware store and it worked just fine.

I only did the bottom with pigment and cut lapped to the deck with a pin line but some spots like the nose and tail were a bit darker were it over lapped a bit but when it was sanded down for the next layer, you could hardley see it.

Thing about epoxy is that if you run short during your lam, you can just mix up an other bach and keep going.

Although I did make sure I had enough colored resin so I didn't have to try and match the color.

Cheers

With a board that big you want to mix two batches.  First you want to weigh your epoxy, mix in the pigment and divided into two containers. This will keep the color consistant.  I like to divided it up something like 2/3 for the bottom and a 1/3 for the rails laps.  Add the hardener to the first batch, spread it out and work the bottom. When done with this add hardener to the second batch and work the rails laps.  This way you allow yourself more working time and the color will come out even.

Have you considered doing a foam stain on the foam?
