15 minute shapes

The quickie shape can be found at surfshops in Dana Point and Hermosa. Shortboards retailing for slightly more than 200$ and longboards for just under 300$. Why waste the time and money to call it a “custom Board”. A 9’9" blank with discount is 74$, shaping about the same. My glass jobs cost me roughly 230$, it is seldom I get an all clear, single box, sanded finish longboard. I can get one like that for 30-40$ less. So I have 380$ just in basic cost, then add on insurance, rent, vehicle, taxes, advertizing, tool updates, utilities and the cost of sandpaper, blocks planes, template material. P.T. Barnum once said “There’s a sucker born every minute”. Unless you are building boards for your own pleasure and not for commerce, there is no future in building a product that you essentially give away. I have heard the theory that “I will make it up in volume”. Any of you that have made you own boards know how labor intensive of a venture it is, it isn’t any easier to build 20 than one. So if any of you have the idea of board building as a living, don’t get caught up in the cheap board trap, you won’t last long. Just my take on it all. Jim
