1930's Surfboard

This is a 1930’s board that was made from a kit found in a Popular Mechanics magazine. It has rocker added to the nose, to suggest that it was used for surfing. It was found under a house, rotting away, in Venice, CA. The plan was to either sand it down, bondo and varnish, or take off the top to expose the ribbing underneath. Any suggestions on what to do to it from you all out in Swayland?

Here is the pic

Cool, but I dont know what I’d do with it either.

Either a part of my house was suitable for its display after restoration/cleanup or I’d take Ebay cash.

Leave it alone, it is a collectible that belongs in a museum, and will never be surfed. Sanding it down, adding bondo and painting it will fuck it up.

show some close ups of the worst areas.

I’ve got a neighbor, Griff, whom has restored at least one Blake style board. He does some really immaculate finish work.

We oughta have him take a look at it.

I tend to agree with the gentleman whom suggested a museum.

At least do a proper restore…this thing deserves better than Bondo.

Tell saf I haven’t forgotten my tongs…will ring you tomorrow, Diamond.

I agree with Resinhead.

How many times on “The Antique Road Show” has somebody turned some priceless item to a worthless piece of shit by trying to refinish it?

Granted most surfboards aren’t worth much but you never know. Take it to an expert you trust and get a legitimate appraisal. AFOAF’s neighbor might be a good place to start.

It may be that the nose rocker modification makes it less desirable than the original but I’ve seen a pitiful looking Simmons board that fetched over $20,000 at auction.

Would make a whale of a flowerpot, a heck of a drum for the drum circle, a interesting medium for the graffiti artists or even make a few bucks lifting it up and down around muscle beach on the boards.

Restoration is not always the most enjoyable “new” life imo, some things might be better reincarnated.

Which ever, if not unique; at least a old score.

looks to my eye like a perfect excuse

to drive to the surfing heritage museum

in san clemente for an appointment

with a cleric in the surfboard temple.

if nothing else you may see another example of simular

constructions better condition and worse.

then and only then will you be able to determine

the appropriate path to light.

…ambrose…

of course the history

of the board can only expand

after a trip to san clemente

I highly recommend you don’t touch it until you find out it’s true value.

The Surfing Heritage Foundation in San Clemente is a legitimate museum with real experts. You should contact them about having it assesed. It maybe a true jewel of surfboard history that must be handled with great care or it could be firewood. They should be able to tell you.
