I was born in 1966 and would love to have a board from my birth year…what were some of the best boards from 1966?
Boards from that era that come to mind:
Jacobs - 422
Noll - Da Cat
Morey/Pope - Peck Penetrator
Hobie - Corky Carroll Model
Weber - Performer
G & S - Midget Farelly Stringerless
Harbour - Banana
Bing - Pipeliner
Don’t forget…
Hansen, Master, or 50/50, or Superlight. Especially if I shaped it. You want a board with a glassed on fin. Fin boxes went into use at Hansen, in 1967.
Hobie - Phil Edwards model, and Noserider
Surfboards Hawaii - Model A, Noserider
Harbour - Trestle Special
Jacobs - Donald Takayama model, Lance Carson model
Gordon and Smith - Mike Hynson model, Stretch, Skip Frye model
Rick Surfboards - Barry Kanaiaupuni model, Dru Harrison Improviser
Bing - Harold Iggy model
Con - Wing Nose model
Yater - Spoon
IMHO,
Morey/Pope - Peck Penetrator
A truly revolutionary piece of Surfing history…

A Spoon couldn’t hurt…
Joe Larkin '66 pig…Gary Birdsell '66 Signature Model .

What, in your opinion, sets the Penetrator apart from other boards of the period?
Also, I’ll add the MP Blue Machine to the list. Though that might be a 1967 entry. It was a Bob Cooper design.
Is the board intended to be ridden, or used as a wall hanger?
There would be a big difference. And yes, you could have both.
It’s to be ridden…I may also hang it on the wall (when it’s not in the water) but my goal is to have a 66’ I can ride. This will be the problem…finding one will be hard enough…finding one I can afford will be even harder. I know most people see these boards as collector items and price them accordingly…I want it to be in good shape so it will ride like it was intended to…but realize being in good shape will drive up the price. Regardless…finding one of these boards is very important to me and I don’t plan on giving up…I’m 50 this year and it would make one hell of a birthday gift to myself!
Where are you? East? West? Gulf?
East Coast…Jersey
JPC3,
What was true at HANSEN, was most most likely true of other west coast board builders. In 1966, the bulk of production was being shipped to the east coast. You should have a fairly reasonable likelyhood of finding a decent example of a 1966 era board. Good hunting.
Bill is right. There are some great finds on the East Coast. The “fad” wore of quickly for some. Many wound up in the rafters of the garage or basement. They usually look pretty good because they haven’t seen the light of day in years. Lowel
do you want an original or a new one? many of the boards listed are currently available though maybe not from the original shaper.
i know you can get a new penetrator from the guy that shaped them back then. yater still makes his spoons…they might be cheaper than finding a good, used one…
Your hep!

The “Snubnose” Ah, maybe late 65, Morey Pope, extremely progressive group.
Note! My Humble Opinion…
#1. Downrail
#2. Tail rocker vs. nose
And maybe the rails…
I was local and Bob Cooper, oh my!
The first asyimetrical board I saw was a “Blue machine”.
Like john, whata guy!
Ripped in ta day and still does…
Really like watching his footwork off center of board.
Looking for an origional…just as excited about owning a piece of history as I am about riding it.
Hardest thing will be finding a board model made in the exact year 1966. I did hear that a few makers have accurate records if you can find a board with a number on it. Good luck
