1970's G&S Modern Machine

Since finishing up my last two boards, I have nothing new on the shaping stand, but I have a few notions simmering on the backburner for my next projects.

One of which is a 1970's style Gordon and Smith Modern Machine.  I'm thinking of shaping a 7-6 version.  Doesn't have to be an exact replica, but any information, rail shots, rocker shots, or any pics at all, ride reports, suggestions on best rails, rocker, bottom, fins, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I'm thinking single fin with V, or maybe a thrailkill style double-single?

By today’s standards, that outline would probably be called a funshape. However, it is my opinion that the majority of recreational surfers would be better off on such a design. I have some ads with the Modern Machine fairly well represented, visually. Will try to dig them up for you.

thanks Sammy that would be awesome

One of my 50$ cocoa beach yard sale finds…this was the pic I sent to vintage surfboards on Facebook I believe.and yes I ride this regularly and so should everyone!

Huck,

If you choose the double fins, know that I have several sets of them (single foiled) available.      However, ‘‘normal’’ double foiled fins will work just fine.      Just make sure they are well matched.

Bill

Hey Bill thanks, check your PMs

Huck, Check The G&S web site. They still make the Modren Machine.

Thanks Artz, I did check the G&S website out of curiousity, they had a pic but no real information that would be useful in shaping.  No problem.  The thread is a year old, and my Banana Boat filled this niche for me.  But someone revived the thread, and I’m glad, 'cause it rekindled my interest in the Thrailkill fin setup, and after talking with Bill, I plan to utilize that arrangement on a board I’m currently working on.

It is cool that they’ve revived the “Modern Machine” as a current model.

Yes it is cool that G&S brought the MM back. Also nice to see that they are still in business. I had heard that they went under a few years back.

I thought you might get some info off the Photos. You seem to have good eye for working out some basics.  You could also find a shop that would have one in inventory and get a good look at the whole Board.

my shaping secret exposed!!

haha you’re right I get a ton of info studying pics on Internet.
