The hair dryer is for wax removal. The deck on this board is a "non-slip" ha,ha. Looks like one layer of 6 oz cloth laminated on top of the gloss coat for traction. My best friend had the same thing on one of his boards back in the day. Chris has the 80's quad right now (San Francisco). I have another 80's quad out in the shed somewhere if anyone wants to ride it (San Diego). The plan is to go crazy with a 5" random orbital sander to get rid of all the old repairs and prep all the new dings. I'm going to do the fins last. Just want to get the board water tight......
Rooster....I voted No New Taxes...I lost!
SD Repair.....I have about 30 feet of 8 oz Volan for you if you want it......

Still can’t figure out how to subscribe to a thread without posting in it so I’ll just post here to say I’m looking forward to this one. I sold the old electric duck twinfin I had - which also had the textured glass deck - but I have an old Al Merrick quad that could use some work.
oh heck yah
is there anything you need that you would want to trade for the glass
ive got alot of surfing stuff, fishing stuff, yellow fin tuna that i got last week, and rock fish from this week

That's ok Sting. Brownie can use it to build the high speed rail from Bakersfield to Modesto. You don't REALLY believe it was for the kids do you? Lookin forward to the restore, too. Mike

Moon Beam Bullet Nose Board !!!!!! No taxes required,,,
Stingray will foot the bill...where's McDing when I need him???? We're going to stay on budget...,,,,,,,,Low budget!!!
I did lam resin and filler for the nose and tail....Took more than one pour for the tail......I use Home Depot 1.5 inch tape for this step......
A cheap rasp file works well to shape out the filler......you gotta time it as the resin is curing,,,,
too soft cloggs the file......too hard more work.....
What are you using for filler?
I’m subscribed now too.
Ray, you are a credit to …“whatever kind you are” everwhere. Thanks for putting this up for us. Can’t wait to see the finished product
..... nice , Ray !
It's good to see it progressing . Well done , mate !
Matching / building a new swallowtail up from your 'filler' is a bit tricky , eh ? I only had to do it one time , thankfully .... on my 1970s Len Dibben twinny .
I guess , when you guys say 'filler' , you mean something like 'microballoons' ? [or , 'q-cell' [which is foam-dust like stuff] , to us Aussies] .
Here , 'filler' can also be a term to describe [ your ] 'sanding resin' .
No doubt , there are different words used elsewhere in the world , to describe these things , too....
ahhhh... semantics , eh ?!
thank goodness for PHOTOS , because they clarify things , LOTS !!!
keep 'em coming , please ?
Will you surf this board when it's done Ray ?
have you surfed the quad ? they both look like fun .
I am going to be riding my Walden as a twinny soon , now the surf is in the summer smallness / shallow banks stage . [I'm still LOVING the "glo in the dark twin fins" , that I made from the template that 'Nocean' very kindly sent me ! ]
cheers !
ben
oops , double post , so ...edit... this was a Crozier board , that I had c.1976/7.....
Wish I still had it , it would be interesting to see the bottom , the rails , the rocker , the finbox [it was a single fin]
On my homemade skatey , I laminated a magazine photo , by Steve Wilkings , of Lopez , tubed at Pipe ... remote control cameraboard early days experiments by them ....
Hi Stingray,
I've got similar project I hope to start on soon. Someone had cut the swallow tail off at the butt crack and made the board I'm working on a square tail. I was planning to sand the glass down to the foam, glue on some scrap foam and reshape the tail. Was there a particular reason you used filler rather than foam?
Thanks,
Ray
The Twin Fin Surfboard... aka ...Gov Brown Bulletnose... is 6"3" x 21 3/4" x 2 3/4"...I'll try to ride it when it's done but my shortboard days are long gone. I will stay on budget and not spend 60-100 Billion Dollars of tax payer money on this project...heck...should only cost me a few bucks to get this thing rolling....or should I say riding......
I had a debate with myself about foam vs filler...filler won....the plan is to loan out the surfboard to Swaylocks Surfers up and down the California Coast... so I feel that filler will be stronger and last longer.....and that's why the tips of the swallow tail will be rounded.....of course pointed tips would be more correct for the 70's and much better for Jabbing my political opponents....ha ha...think I've spent about $3.50 so far........Stingray....

Most surf shops sell a magic white powder to be used in ding repair. The Big Swell filler came from SurfRide in Oceanside, Ca. $3.95. The BlockSurf Q-Cell came from Mitch's in Solona Beach, Ca. $6.00....plus about 8% California sales tax....
any Swaylocker worth his salt is going to try to figure out how to buy this stuff in bulk......
I can’t tell how much is in those bags but, Fiberglasssupply.com and foamez.com carry the stuff:
http://fiberglasssupply.com/Product_Catalog/Fillers/fillers.html
http://www.foamez.com/glassing-surfboards-surfboard-ding-repair-c-3_66.html?page=2&sort=20a
A long time ago I set out on a quest to find the right resin filler....I've read several Swaylock's posts that just added to the confusion....and The last thing the Low Tech Lab needs is some long winded post about the structural / mechanical properties of resin filler. I need a product that is cheap and easy to use...must be easy to sand !!!
In the Lab right now we have MicroBallons, MicroSpheres, Milled Fiber, and Cabosil...I've tryed a few other things too but I forget the names.....So Far MicroSpheres is winning in our testing.........
...still not 100% sure what that secret white powder is that the surf shops are selling.....also I think "Q-Cell" is a Surfer Slang word.
Fun Stuff.............Stingray.
2 photos at a time.......Swallow Tails are never equal...one side is always a little bit thicker...that's ok in my book.
lookin' good Ray!
