well ladies and gentlemen, i present to you, my first board. it is my 10’1 x 24.5 x 3.5 giant.
errors: rails not as pinched as i wanted them, nose and tail too thick, not as even as it could be on the deck, concave not deep enough, tail a little uneven.
overall i had a great time doing it and spent about an hour and a half last night just staring at it in awe that i actually made it and thinking about how it would ride. i had steve from aloha glass it because was pretty pleased with how the board turned out and didn’t want to ruin it after i had made the shape. considering i have never even watched anyone ever shape a board i am happy with how i did. most of my friends are pretty impressed as well.
Wow, your first board looks great. It seems as though when everyone shapes their first few boards the nose and tail always seem to come out a little thick so don’t worry about. Just more flotation!
my 15th board I’m just working on now looks worse, you’ve done a GOOD job there !
Did you spray the bottom [grey]? That’s not a tint, is it ??
Was that ‘aloha surfboards’ , as in Manly, Sydney, or is there an american/hawaiian company too ? I believe one of the young crew here comes from Manly… [you know who you are !]
"chip"
I look forward to hearing where you surf it, and how it rides .
[I grew up in Sydney, is why I asked the ‘aloha surfboards’ question. Lived in the same suburb as Barton Lynch [Mosman] , before he became a pro surfer and moved to Manly, and then he moved…to Whale Beach [$$$$!!!] . Peter Garrett [from ‘Midnight Oil’] also used to be sighted on our streets regularly]

Yeah I don’t live right at Manly, I spend all my time there. (actually the waves were allright yesterday) [I grew up in Sydney, is why I asked the ‘aloha surfboards’ question. Whale Beach, ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!) Mosman (Soon to be $$$$!) Windsor, (Dump!) Josh,
nah, im talking about aloha glassing in westminster, ca.
and i rode the board today for the second time. it would not have even been rideable had it not been for the sheer size of this board, but it rode really well today on the ankle to knee high beachbreak. the thing is a tank and paddles faster than any board i have ever been on. the board turns pretty well for the size it is, probably better than i would have expected, and isn’t as cumbersome as i thought. i was able to whip it around quickly and manuever into position relatively easy. i attempted to get up on that nose, but the waves didn’t quite have the power or speed to maintain the speed to keep the nose out of the water. at least im hoping thats what the problem was, although i suspect the fact that the nose is nearly an inch thick at the tip is definately goign to add some resistance to the glide off the nose. whatever, it was my first board and im pleased with the fact that i shaped it. glassing is something i dont really have the faith in myself to do yet, but i will probalby shape a smaller board and spend as minimal as possible on materials so that if i mess up on glassing i wont really care all that much. thanks for the input, by the way. now i jsut need to find some real waves.
Your board looks great. My first longboard came out with a super thin nose and the next two were too thick. Oh well. Here’s a picture of a 9’2" also glassed by Steve. He does great work.
