Just finished my first board & got to surf it…best feeling in the world!
Had 2 fun sessions in Jersey, Easter morning was a fun waist-high day in Bay Head & last Friday took it out for dawn patrol on a clean chest-head on set day in Avon.
It’s a twin fin fish, I’m a big guy 6’2’’ so I made it super-wide & took the thickness out to the rails, 1-4oz. on bottom 2 on top, Epoxy Resin, used ProBox fin boxes & put in FCS Twin Fins (nice & big).
Thinkin about getting keels for it but as of right now the fcs twins are fine.
Hand sanded it down (which was a pain in the a**, but an experience all in its own. Def pickin up a grinder/power pad for future sanding.
Dim’s 6’0’‘x22’‘x2.5’’
There is not way I would have been able to do it without you guys on Swaylock’s…so thanks.
Shout out to Brian at Greenlight…he was my go-to guy for advice…his knowledge is top-notch.
Sweet work man! I’m super impressed. Thanks for posting pics of the process.
For the sake of first time shapers who might check out this thread before starting, what was one or two things I taught you that made your first board turn out that nice?
…and I only spent an hour with Maritt in my shop when he picked his materials up. I guess all of our phone conversations don’t translate as quickly as a visual show and tell!
Feel free to come out here and visit anytime brotha
Thanks for all the compliments…def appreciate it guys.
My current project is a 6’8" Performance Funshape, its dim’s are similar to a matt kechel board that I rode awhile back that I always wanted in my quiver.
Some things that the new shaper should keep in mind (other than reading & wathcing EVERYTHING they can find) is:
-first that hand sanding the hotcoat is not the way to go, way too much work & progress never comes. Go w. the power…
-use epoxy on your first board. If I used Poly resin it would have kicked before I poured it, expoxy gives enough time to get it done, but don’t take it for granted, it will still bond fairly quickly (prob ~30 min)…actually when doing nose/fin patches, or putting down your decals, mix a small batch first…literally 1oz to put all that on your board…then mix up a big batch for the lam…For my deck lam…i mixed up a full batch and put all that down, by the time I was covering the rails, it barely soaked into the cloth (close one)
-Actually something that I never read, but Brian from Greenlight gave me & it worked great, was an awesome way to seal the pinline…I did one layer of deck lam…let it cure…then put down my pinline…let it dry…then put my second deck lam layer on…it sealed the pinline in and kept it fresh…it takes an extra day but it seemed to pay off.
