1st handplane attempt

Hi. I just joined and I wanted to share my first surfcraft project! I also have the template done for my next handplane… I just have to decide what materials to use! I look forward to talking to you all in the future! Thanks.

Nice!

Not a big following on Sway’s or elsewhere, HA!

Lot’s a stuff going on with handplanes…

Keep the stoke…

Thanks for the positive energy Matty! I checked out your site…Man, you make pretty boards! I HOPE someday to make some nice boards too. Later!

Ben Chipper saw the hand planes I’ve been making recently and he said why don’t you post them on Sways ? And I thought Nah, no one there makes hand planes.

heres one I Finished and rode today.

All carbon shell.

Time traveler

Next.

I am guessing you hold it between the Manta fangs.

woohoo !

I’ll gladly test ride it this evening .

Or for the dawno tomorrow , if it’s ready ?

And hopefully , I can take some photos of it in ACTION , too, eh  mate ??

   cheers !

  Ben

…that’s a nice ’ in the tube ’  shot , Matty !

  Is that you ?

 cheers !

Ben

how did it go , Brett ?

did you surf north end ?  arvo ?

there were some really  N I C E , empty , waves last night just before dark !

Ben, I’m going to glass in some XPS for bouyancy, that’s the only thing it lacks.

Surffoils, you are a mad scientist!

I just put the outline on some scrap I cobbled together. Cant wait to get busy on it tomorrow!

Hobbs, Easy on about calling me “Mad” , more suitable tags would be ‘Enlightened’,  ‘Visionary’ or 'The Most Amazing Designer of the New Millenium '…

That’s a great outline. I started doing hand planes because it was an area where no one frets about the design, it’s all free hand magic doing whatever you think.

Looking forward to your build !

1/2 handplane, 1/2 star fighter.

Wow that looks amazing! What are you going to build it with?

I cut the outline and shaped mine up. I put the first coat of poly-u on it and I’m letting it dry really well before the next coat.

That’s really sleek.  Your shape looks just right.

I used to do a foam mold and fibreglass and sand it and then polish it up and put mold release on,but now I start with cardboard of varying thicknesses and build a model with hot-glue. Cardboard has a consistent density and it creates uniform complex curves. Once the cardboard shape is right I put a coat of resin to hold the shape, then lay a layer of Saran Wrap over the mold and then glass over that.

The cardboard is rigid enough to support the glass without bending and the Saran Wrap doesn’t stick to epoxy resin hen it sets.

I prefer to use alternate layers of glass and heavy weight carbon.

One set of glass and carbon gets you a prototype that’s surf ready but not indestructible.

Two sets gets you indestructible.

The creative mind is alive and well…

Thats a pretty clever process!  Ive never worked with fiberglass…Yet! I really like the idea of shaping with the cardboard. Good to know about the saran wrap…I was a little confused on the whole release agent/material issue…Thanks.

Thanks Bill !

It’s a clever system as it uses no foam, there’s no sanding, no dust or noise, the cardboard costs nothing ( cereal boxes), you get exact symmetry and it’s a family friendly process.

The mold making process should be free if you can find cardboard, tape and a garbage bag or Saran Wrap.

This ones ready to glass.
