1st handplane attempt

I thank you both Sparx and John for your comments.

When I post my ideas up, I watch the Views click over and over and then some-one or some-two step up and say…

I get what you’re saying…

I understand the difference you’re working to achieve…

I understand your spirit of adventure.

And so I thank you two guys for stepping up with Props for my work.

I was the kid who always said Why ? And then Why ?

And then Why to that answer and so on.

When I got a new toy and I saw a screw on the back, it was an irresistible invitation to the magic inside…

What if I could work out what was going on inside and then do it better ?? And it’s the same even now.

Every day it’s these questions I’ve never been able to stop so I need to find the answers. What if something was faster,? why can’t everyone be healthy, ? why does shit happen to some people and how can I help them ? If so many people can do amazing things in life for themselves and other people, why can’t I ? And that’s why every day I get out of bed to find out if and how I can do it better

It is possible to improve a mouse trap as well as many other things.  Remain on your quest Brett.  There are many Holy Grails for sure.

My motto is, “Somebody has to be first.”

I suspect you have been first several times.

Agreed…brilliant!!!

Sways is still a good place for the ones amongst us who do it differently, and doing it differently has its rewards…

Its taking off with the lip on a new design with a leap of faith…

Knowing it’s never been done before…

and that you are That person to first experience this.

It’s pride in making that first ever drop, riding your own thoughts turned into fibreglass only by you.

Feeling the quality of  drive, stability, the distinctive flavour of your craft,.

Then finally turning off the wave knowing that this uplifting  ‘once only ever in my life’   feeling is completely fulfilling, that ‘different’ is more than just slightly better than the status quo, that the road less travelled is not just possible , it brings its own riches that last for life.

The ‘different’ experience can be recreated if you share it through Sways where other people can see it, copy it and enjoy it…it becomes better than that first experience.

Enough of that.

Here’s a few fins to test run on the handplane.

I meant TORTURED creative genius!  HAHA

I’d say driven by the possibility of what’s ahead, excited by the adventure of what I can do today, how much can I pack into a day, build upon to build more tomorrow.  I believe I can do these things and that’s why I do them.

I think it’s a genetic thing too because  my 3 sons are the same.

Start early, keep going, finish late and dream of what I’m going to do tomorrow. Lucid dreams, colour, people, full environments. Or it could be early dementia !!

This time the foil component is midway in depth so it foils within the wave not plane. This moves the fin element to the lowest.

Straight out of the vacbag, needs trimming.

Ready to surf.

Well now I’m dying for a ride report.

Monkstar1, here’s a ride report of several handplanes.

A. The first of the recent vacbag planes.12" long X 11" wide. 80 sq in of planing area split between the central area and 2 side foils. Lifts very quickly, holds the lift and glide at low speeds. Theres grip due to the angled side walls but not consistent grip.  Due to the tapered side foils there’s a bit of fore/ aft instability and is better suited to smaller waves.

B. Smaller planing area of 60 sq in to counter the excess of area in no. 1.  No lifting foils but has side keel fins. A lot more grip but uninspiring to ride.

C. Increased the area up to 70 sq in for quick planing, kept the side keels for drive and added small lifting foils.everything worked as expected but as the foils lift you lose grip.

D. Splitting the planing area with the Anti Matter components in between. I’ve angled the central area with a 5 deg AOA so it provides lift at low speeds but nothing when the foils lift. Good smooth lift, easy turning but lacking grip in steep waves.

Foils reduce drag but reduce grip when they plane so I need to work out a total planing area for quick lift but keep the foil area minimal so they don’t plane. And put the keels under the foils.
This new one is getting some waves and I’ll get back with a report after I’ve given it a good run.

I think these should be called Hand-Foils rather than Hand-Planes.

Good stuff. I’m not into hand planes but enjoying this thread nonetheless.  Carry on!

The life cycle of a handplane ride is in 3 parts…

Buoyancy assists in getting to the zone and positioning the plane on the surface as the wave picks you up.

Planing area takes over from buoyancy in getting the acceleration needed to enrage and match the waves speed.

Grip takes over from lift beyond takeoff and creates the ongoing drive on a sloping face.

Without drive, life is a downhill slide for a handplane.

Prototypes

BADASS !

Very cool Brett.  I like…

I think you have a winner.

Getting prototypes made is quicker than building them and then it’s all about testing each of them.  Drop by the factory then go surfing.

Brett,

I just saw your Instagram pages where you have been posting photos of your handplane work.  Nice.

I cannnot interact on instagram because I do not have a cell phone (Luddite when it comes to cell phones and social media).  But I did find the internet URLs so I can keep up with what you are doing.  For other Luddites like me, these are the URLs for Surffoils’ instagram pages:

Thanks for that Bill, here’s a few more pics of what’s happening, prototypes and Carbon vacbagging.
