I have a new 7’8" Egg 2+1 with 10" center box and O’Fishl sides. What would be the ideal wave conditions for surfing it tri or surfing it single? Bascially I wanted to know what waves would suit it better single and what waves would suit it for slapping on the sides. I have a single fin longboard and this is my first shot at a smaller 2+1 board.
Different people like to ride single fins in different conditions, but I like to ride them in clean, lined-up surf that has some juice. On beach break and sloppy days, especially in steep, flat windswell peaks, I like to plug in the sides so that I can generate a little speed from turning the board. Enjoy the new board!
Hey Tank, If you down size the rail fins to somewhere around 2.75" & 3.75" and put a center on it that’ll give you some drive but not stiffen the board up. You’ll have the best of both worlds – extra lift and quickness that you get with rail fins and holding power and smoothness that a single gives. I just put a similar set-up with a flexible center fin on my 8’0" that qualifies as an egg except for maybe the concave bottom and it was very responsive and held in steep walls very nicely. If you want it to surf like a thruster you down size you center fin and put some generous rail fins on it, this will give you more lift off the rails and work well when the surf isn’t as clean.
