2+1 Fin Setup Question

I am building a board for a friend. The board will be setup with a 2+1 fin setup and I have some questions about the effects of the placement of the fins. I have read through the archives but would like suggestions.

Board Specs:

9’6" 17.5 X 22.5 X 14.5 semi-rounded pin tail

4.75 nose rocker and 3.5 tail rocker with slight vee in tail.

Soft rails from nose and hardend up at 24 inches from the tail.

Will be ridden primarily at Cardiff, 2-6 foot waves.

Person riding the board is fairly inexperienced. He weighs about 180 to 190.

From the archives I have read that the center box should be approx. 6 to 6.5 inches up from the tail with the side bites anywhere from 13-15 inches up. Side bites are set 1 to 1.25 inches from the rail with 1/8 to 1/4 inch toe in. Cant runs from 3 to 5 degrees.

Would appreciate suggestions on proper placement of the fins.

Thanks,

Rick

Didn’t you answer your own question?

Only question remaining…does he like snappy longboards on boards that can be turned from anwhere on the board?

Widen the cluster for bigger sweetspot, narrow it for snappier, more powerful turns.

Tail fin placement has to be ridden and judged after the ride, changed, then ridden and judged again.

As a general rule, sidebites right at the curviest part of the hips, to initiate pivot point for sharp turns.

It’s not set in any manual, it changes with exact rocker, bottom shape, template, rail line, and rider preferences.

"Widen the cluster for bigger sweetspot, narrow it for snappier, more powerful turns. … As a general rule, sidebites right at the curviest part of the hips, to initiate pivot point for sharp turns. "

Thanks Lee, I figured I could count on you to come up with what I was looking for. I had all the variables but I just didn’t know how they impacted the ride.
