2+1 Fin Setup

Hi all,

Done some searching on the archives but can’t find what I’m after.

I’ll be installing a 2+1 fin setup on a fish (swallow tail) for a friend of mine - by 2+1 I mean 2 twin fins and a smaller trailing fin…

Has anyone installed these before? If so, what sort of layout have you used? Is it similar to a thruster layout? (in terms of dimensions of where the fins are located).

Cheers.

    hi Cayman !

mine had a back finbox , a bit far up from the tail to allow thruster configuration ...

but the side plugs were at 11" up , yes

[the back of the rear fin was far up , in comparison to a thruster's ...

  6" [!]  , instead of 3 - 3 1/2" up.

  the fishes in question were  5'11 x 20  and 5'8 x 21 1/2

....yours ?   [what dimensions ?  And .... do you have  a PHOTO of it you could post here , please ? ]

   for a '2+1' setup , the fins I mainly tried were either a 6" back fin , with 3" side fins , or a 7" back fin , with  3 1/2 " side fins ,

  or ,

with the 'twinny with trailer' setup . ....

5 "  side fins , with a 3" or so box fin [back fin].... but a "nubster" type back fin 'could' work , too, mate ? ['Nocean'  and I both have tried these ...his side fins are a bit larger , even ?!  in fact , we both have the SAME templates .... thanks to Noe for sending me them !] There is a photo , on the 'my fin tinkerings' thread , if you want to check it out .

will you be putting in back fcs plugs ?

.... or [hopefully ! ] .... a FINBOX !!

... so you or your friend can ride it as a SINGLE  fin , too !

 [ I LOVE single fin fish !!]

okay , mate .... I hope this is helpful ?!

  cheers !

  ben

Thanks mate. Mine is a 5’11"x20". I’m putting S-plugs on this one - as I want to try a slightly different planshape and contours for a single-fin…

Which of the above dimensions do you recommend for a “twinnie with smaller trailer” setup? Also, given that it’s a swallow tail, do you measure the center fin from the bottom of the tail, or the inside of the swallow?

Cheers.

hi mate

what is an s- plug ?

"which of the above dimensions ?"

.... as in the 5'8 or the 5'11 board , do you mean ?

  for ME,  I need a 5'11 [minimum !!] , to paddle nowadays ...6' 2" , preferably ! BUT I'm 51 ... how old / fit is your friend ?

it will depend on what YOUR FRIEND wants to ride , yes ?  you said the  board is for them , eh ?

yep , back of fin [base] measured from the tail tips [tip to tip measurement = tail ' pod'  from memory , it was 7" on the 'prawn' [5'11"] ...on the 5'8 ["bushfire fish"] , it is 9" , tip to tip , and the swallow tail is only 3 1/2" deep [so I could install a plug , to allow the thruster setup option ]

and , the 'prawn' [5'11"] ...

the prawn , pre-shortening , with my  old 'shaping bay' [partitioned-off balcony] , above it !....

This board at this stage was 6'1 , two inches were later taken off the tail , and the 'swallowtail' was reshaped , so the back fin was 'further back' [...for the later option of 'thruster-like' setups , I recall !]

Cayman ,

here is  the 'nubster and twinny' setup , on the walden ...

....but , it is only the BACK fin plug which is anywhere NEAR the thruster distances from the tail [pod] !  where and why  their plug placements eludes me ...

might try emailing him one day to find out [I'm kicking myself , because I forgot to ask him , when he was here in perth with mctavish and meyerhoffer   [? 2 years ago now?] !]
