I’ve always used 233+ tape for everything and never had a problem. Bought a couple new rolls a couple weeks back. First I had a cut lap bleed through. I blamed myself even though I had very carefully gone around the board pressing the tape into the foam with a mixing stick. Then the other day using the same tape I masked off an area on a sheet of glass and laid up a fin panel. Sure enough the resin bled under the tape. No way it should have bled under the tape on a sheet of glass like that. Wondering if they changed the formula again or if I just got a bad batch. Anybody else had problems?
You probably just got some that was sitting around too long. Everything has a shelf life…even quality 3M masking tape.
Call 3M and tell them your situation. I had a problem with the blue painter’s tape and they sent me some new rolls gratis.
3M 233+ is called 401+ now…
I don’t think they changed the formula
Never understood the devotion to 233 around here(Sways). Must be the green color. Lots of good tApes out there for less money. Some are even made by 3M.
Are you willing to name a few? Local or national distribution? Very interested…
I’m interested too McDing.
i have had cheaper tapes tear on my when pulling tape on a hotcoat.
3M -2214
Honestly though; I’ve been using tape from Dunn-Edwards tapes. Which if my memory serves me well, is made by Shurtape. 3M’s new Exterior Blue tape is also excellent. Great for no bleed lines.
thanks McDing… will have to check those out
2214 is the most commonly used general purpose tape used in West Coast glass shops. I’ve said it before but I guess no one really heard me. Lowel
When it"s on sale ( like right now) you can buy 4 roles of orange tape 1 1/2" for $9.49. I’ve had good luck with it. Sticks to anything. No bleed on spray jobs. Only occasional minimal residue on hot coats. Almost nothing. Just a couple of small spots. Easily wiped clean. Lowel
Yep.
2214
We call it cheap tape.
Great with resin.
I use it for general masking and hot Coating. Even glossing.
2380 for my hard tapeing.
It is a medium quality tape.
Cheaper alternative to 231.
I don’t use colored tapes.
I am the tape monster.
That’s Dunn-Edwards Orange
Thanks guys!
Just had the same experience as op with new tape. Now I got syrup on the fin boxes. This was 233 as well.
We agree McDing! 2214 is great. 2727 is also another great option as well.
Message received this time.
Much appreciated McDing.
I don’t know what might be going on with 3M 233 lately. I sell it but don’t personally use it on my boards. Keep in mind that 3M makes two Green tapes. They also make Scotch 3M 2060. You may have picked that up by mistake. Lowel
