Just started 2nd board and pretty fired up. Actually got an order, friend asked me to take his 9’2" board and make him a copy as a 7’6". Its a Tudor style longboard with ‘Heavy’ Glass, and a ‘Deep’ resin tint.
I feel pretty comfortable with the blank shaping and templating down at this point (using a combo of boardcad and another board of similar size to make the templates).
Specific Questions
What glass options would you use to define a Heavy glass job? 2 6oz on the bottom and three on top? Or does it have to do with the thickness of the overlying resin
What goes into getting that really deep looking resin tint? Extra hot cot and more resin on top?
You can get pretty much any blank glued up with any size wood you want…
We have a blank with a 3/4 inch stringer in it right now. We have done 2inch Balsa stringers etc…
There is a 6’0r sitting in Fiberglass Hawaii Ventura that was glued up with 2 3/8s stringers and it weighs like 12 pounds blank alone.
So that saying, they will glue up anything you want.
DEEP comes from color saturation. You will get a deeper color with the extra layers of glass. Even better with Volan.
However this is all technically possible, being that you are having a hard time knowing how to verbalize what you want, you may have a tougher time actually doing it.
Good color takes a lot of practice.
Its a big project for board 2.
Not trying to bring you down but you may need to work a few more clears and try a few dips etc before you go for a full board resin color.
Tint vs Opaque do you want it solid or translucent.
It's takes more than two boards to understand all this stuff........I want to know how you can take a 9'2 and copy it as a 7'6" ?..............SammyA has some good stuff for you...tints are Translusent,,,, ,,,Yes.......
heavy and deep.....well, I don't surf big waves so I don't know........Ray.
Who do you recommend for higher density blanks? Does anyone make blanks with bigger stringers already in play as well? Any particular type of glue for glue back up the foam to wood if I put in a bigger stringer?
I meant that appearance of deep. To some extent I was guessing that came from the amount of tint added, such that it got closer to opacified. But I didnt know if there were any other techniques involved in bringing it to that deep appearance? I got several tints (as opposed to pigments. My understanding was that pigments were more opaque and tints more transluscent?).
No matter which combo of glass layers you use, there is an optimum amount of resin you need for the lamination. Adding more resin will result in a more brittle glass job. Sure, it will add weight, but it will be the wrong kind of weight. If the guy wants a board that’s heavier than average, get a higher density blank and do a 2x6 bottom with 6x6x4 top. Just an example.
Define “deep”. Do you mean actual darkness of tone, or the appearance of actual depth/thickness. Are you doing a solid color all over? Those are the easiest if you’ve never done a tint before. Have your friend pick the color he wants. Then mix up test batches for color shade and density and lay up some glass on scrap foam to let your pal see what the result will look like. Real resin tints are a differnt animal from plain old pigment. I once had a jar of yellow tint that looked deep orange in the container. Once mixed and diluted into a resin batch, it went true yellow and very transparent. Don’t ask me where to get those tint pigments. It’s been decades. Plain old pigment will work, but it requires trial and error before you get the shade you want. Good luck.
