What about the fireball fish?
Might not have been the first but definitely a beacon in the evolution.
could be , the one i saw at the sacred craft looked more like a compressed hpsb
the Lost movie with Corey Lopez 5’5"x19’1/2" started a trend with the snub nose fish of theirs. Don’t know if the fireball came out later with the Search II movie and “In Search of Tom Curren” where he rode both the Derek’s Skip Frye twin Keel and the Fireball
Funny cause I think the Twinzer was out way before but just didn’t get the airplay
I actually made nd rode a single fin fish with a long combed flex fish fin back in 72-73 and it wasn’t until the single fin broke off that we converted it to a twin keel. I preferred it as a single with the massive twang rebound from the flex fin.
Brewer was making swallow tails for owl similar to what was called the fireball late with tri-fins back in the early 70’s but it was more of a single with two half moon side fins on the swallows. This was way before the thruster showed up in hawaii.
some guy is bringing them back under the term “reverse single” using the 757 fin templates
The Surf Systems Broomtail Fish (no crack), circa 1971, was routinely produced as a single with PressLock side bites.(3 fins) It was also produced as a Surfboards Hawaii twin fin, The Gemini model, to compliment the Aquarius model of the period. I have no doubt that this is the earliest example of a three fin Fish.
The Patterson is a cute little board. But, it’s not a fish. I’d call it a winged swallow. Maybe a winged dove tail. Just saying. Tough to make a 3 finned fish with the deep butt crack. Pull the tips in, reduce the depth of the crack and were talking a swallowtail. Mike
As much as the folks doing the marketing would like you to believe, there is no such thing as a 3 fin fish. 3 fins = thruster.
Rooster speaks as a purest. I happen to agree with him a Fish is a fish a Swallow tail is another animal Just becuse you put a 2 inch butt crack in a board does not make it a fish. Patterson makes some excellent boards
I had a traditional fish that I added a third fin to. It was NOT a thruster. It was a mutant fish.
of course Rooster, Captaincrunch, and Artz are correct…
semantics maybe?
I think Oneula may have answered the op’s question
…those are rocket fishes…
From my ''archives"
ok for discussion purpose we will use the term " rocket fish"
I think we can all agree this is not a thruster
my quiver circa 1972
the super wide fish with the hand made keels (still have them) started out as a single fin with a single comb keel (like the one on the last photo) until it snapped on me and snapped in half hence the bondo repair job. The board was a garbage can gift from our neighbor that I cut off the tail made a swallow and rode it as a “fish tail” board. Never even thought about using three fins on it back then.
in the early 90’s after seeing the curren fireball video, I went to Jeff Bushman and asked him to make me a fireball fish like Curren’s. Below on the right is his interpretation of Curren’s fireball fish with out the channels. A very fast but almost out of control at high speed surfboard unlike the 2004 Jeff Alexander gemini next to it.
Exactly. That Patterson board isn’t even close to what a fish is.
If I took a 70s vintage squaretail twinfin and put a third fin on it, it would not be a “thruster”.
Hah, makes me think about previous discussions about what a fish is.
According to the younger generation here, I have some round tailed fish.
